The Basics
Located in the heart of Louisiana’s capital, Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital is a Joint Commission-accredited behavioral health facility which offers inpatient and dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment to clients 18 years and older.
Accommodations and Food
The chemical dependency program at Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital is centered around a medical detox, with some clients only staying for the duration of this service. The detox phase typically lasts three to six days. Others stay longer, with a maximum stay being up to 28 days, though this decision is generally left up to the medical staff at the hospital. The average length of stay for client is usually two weeks. During this time, clients stay in a special substance abuse-oriented wing of the hospital which holds up to 12 residents at a time in two-person hospital rooms with traditional furnishings. Meals are provided by he hospital cafeteria and dietary restrictions can usually be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
No matter what their length of stay, residents can expect certain hallmarks of a traditional inpatient program even during detox, including two group therapy sessions a day and at least one individual therapy session a week. Additionally, clients are introduced to the 12 steps and there are on-site AA H&I meetings brought in on the first Tuesday of every month.
Dual diagnosis support is at the center of Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital’s program. Clients can expect recovery support for depression, anxiety, affective disorders, suicidal thoughts, bipolar disorder, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder and more. There is medication management available, as well as group psychotherapy sessions and psychological testing. Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital also provides a family program, recreational therapy and relapse prevention classes as well as part of their overall dual diagnosis services.
The staff at Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital who handle these group and individual sessions are both LADCs and mental health therapists, as well as licensed social workers, recreational therapists and LPCs. Furthermore, clients can expect regular visits with the staff psychiatrist, nursing team and medical doctor during detox and beyond.
Typically, an individual’s discharge schedule is dependent on the doctor’s opinion of their progress. Depending on the client, Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital can aid in the transition back home or to a halfway house, long term treatment program or alternative living situation. It is worth noting that there are no outpatient services provided by the hospital once a client completes their initial inpatient program, though referrals can be made.
Extras
The admissions department at Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital is reachable 24 hours a day, seven days a week for those seeking assessments and evaluations. These assessments are free and confidential. Furthermore, Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital provides a mobile assessment team who can travel up to a 60 miles to provide assessments and evaluations to potential clients who may be unable to travel.
In Summary
Though Baton Rouge Behavioral Hospital program is somewhat narrow in their focus solely on short-term inpatient treatment and detox, the facility still offers comprehensive dual diagnosis support. Before they depart, clients also work with Baton Rouge’s behavioral staff to develop ongoing recovery plans. Though this program may not be ideal for everyone, it offers a great start to recovery with plenty of medical support.
