Since 1844, Butler Hospital has been providing a variety of psychiatric and substance abuse services to adolescents, adults and seniors living in Providence, Rhode Island.  Its alcohol and drug treatment wing, Butler Hospital Alcohol and Drug Treatment Services (BHADTS), is available to adults ages 18 and over through a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offered five days a week. The program includes group, individual, and family therapy along with medication management for those dealing with co-occurring disorders. Detox services are also available if needed.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at BHADTS begins with an assessment to identify each client’s needs. After that, counselors help clients create individualized treatment plans, which determines the duration of treatment and frequency of group attendance. For those in need of detox, there is a three to five day inpatient process available with 24-hour supervision. There is also an on-site psychiatrist who provides medication management to those in need of dual diagnosis support.

The PHP provides adults with structured support for a successful recovery. Typically clients attend a series of morning and afternoon groups held Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Clients attend two morning groups before an hour-long lunch break at noon. Lunch is not provided though cafeteria services are available during lunch hours.

After lunch, clients attend two more groups and meet with their physician (when applicable) and counselor for individual sessions. Individual sessions are usually quick check-ins used to monitor progress, though clients can request longer individual sessions scheduled as needed. Groups at BHADTS include educational and discussion based sessions covering topics like relapse prevention, drug education, managing emotions, understanding irrational thinking, Stages of Change, family education and support, and co-occurring disorders.

Twelve-step principles are incorporated into all levels of treatment and outside meeting attendance at NA, AA, Alanon, NarAnon or Ala-teen are highly encouraged.

Family involvement is a crucial part of treatment as well. Along with weekly family educational groups, clients are encouraged to invite family members and loved ones to participate in therapy. The sessions can be scheduled upon request.

The staff includes about 900 clinical and non-clinical members. There are LADCs, psychiatrists, medical students, interns and students in adult psychiatry at Brown University. Treatment modalities include CBT and DBT.

Extras

Aside from the PHP for substance abuse, there are four other PHPs offered at Butler Hospital. The programs focus on providing treatment to individuals of all ages struggling with mental health disorders. Among them are a CBT program, an integrated therapies program, a women’s program and a young adult program. Groups discuss topics such as depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, trauma and impulsive behaviors. The women’s program addresses additional topics like body image, eating disorders and substance abuse. Aside from the young adult program, each PHP varies in length and frequency of attendance, though clients typically meet Monday through Friday for six hours at a time.

The young adult program caters to the needs of those who are 18 through 26 and lasts five to eight days, meeting from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Those who participate in this program learn how to smoothly transition and adjust to an independent life.

In Summary

At Butler Hospital, individuals of all ages are offered a variety of mental health and substance abuse options. The facility aims to group individuals by age and needs in order to provide focused treatment services. In all, it’s best for those willing to commit their days to treatment while having evenings open to practice these tools outside of a structured setting.
