Bend OregonThe Basics

Founded in 2015 in Bend, Oregon, by Dawn Holland-Rogers, who is in recovery, DAWNS House provides sober living for newly clean and sober women fresh out of rehab or jail. Besides being named after founder Holland-Rogers, DAWNS is an acronym for Directly Assisting Women Newly Sober.

Accommodations and Amenities

The 3,300 square foot furnished house accommodates nine women, including a live-in manager. The house includes a spacious dining room furnished with a dining room table and chairs. Adjacent to the dining room is an airy living room furnished with comfortable couches, a big screen Television, a wooden coffee table and a fireplace. Large windows allow sunlight to bathe the rooms. A fully equipped kitchen boasts wooden cabinets, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops surrounded by wooden stools. Amenities include a huge outdoor deck with a hot tub, two large screen TV’s, Netflix and an in-house computer station with Internet access.

Clients share double or triple-occupancy rooms furnished with twin beds that are topped with decorative comforters and pillows. Accommodations vary but typically the rooms contain a dresser, nightstand and decorative lamp. Windows covered with sheer cloth panels provide ambient lighting. Hanging wall art brightens the rooms. Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Nutritional counseling is provided, and clients are assisted with meal choices. Coffee is provided.

Rules and Regulations

DAWNS House exclusively serves women who have undergone at least 30 days of primary care or criminal justice clients transitioning from jail. The women receive individualized recovery plans upon acceptance into the home. They are encouraged to stay a minimum of six months. Clients are subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The facility practices a zero tolerance policy and evicts those who test positive immediately.

For the first 30 days, residents undergo a black out period. The curfew is 9:30 pm seven days a week. Women must find a job during this time or pursue an academic education. Community service is also encouraged. After 30 days, the curfew is midnight seven days a week. Other requirements include attending three weekly 12-step meetings, being at the house meeting and working with a sponsor. The live-in manager serves as both spiritual mentor, and life coach.

Extras

Those requiring aftercare are provided with referrals to local outpatient facilities. Other services provided include vocational and educational guidance.

As a 501c(3) non-profit facility, DAWNS House relies on donations from the community to keep the house running.
