The Basics
Since 1973, Axis 1 Center of Barnwell has been providing counseling services to the residents of Barnwell, South Carolina—a small boarder town roughly 40 miles from Augusta. Axis 1 offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse along with several other prevention services including adolescent drug and alcohol education. Axis 1 provides holistic treatment plans that aim to create stability for clients in all areas of their lives, taking into consideration the overall wellness of their body, mind and spirit.
Treatment and Staff
After assessment, clients work with their counselor to create an individualized treatment plan that determines a minimum number of weekly group and individual therapy sessions. Clinicians then assign clients to psychoeducation and life skills classes particular to their needs. There are also several gender-specific groups each week where clients can discuss the deeply personal aspects of abuse that may impact their substance use.
Currently, Axis 1 offers each client a selection of eight life skills classes and seven education classes. Group therapy uses a variety of modalities including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Groups are led by CACs and MFTs with a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-eight. Clients with co-occurring disorders receive referrals to a mental health clinic for therapy and medication.
The duration of the IOP does not have a set time-frame; clients are discharged once they and their counselor agree that they’ve achieved the goals established during the initial assessment. However, clients typically remain enrolled in the IOP for up to six months and are then invited to attend a weekly recovery group for aftercare.
Groups discuss the 12 steps and clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings outside of their time at the IOP. Axis 1 has a Peer Support Person on staff—a counselor who is herself in recovery and accessible to clients throughout the week for empathetic support. Through their work with her, many who are resistant to attending 12-step meetings become motivated to create a sober social network through local 12-step meetings or other avenues.
Extras
Axis 1 offers an eight-session parenting workshop—Partners in Parenting—as well as a weekly women’s support group. Clients are also assisted with gaining access to a local Food Bank.
DUI Services in both English and Spanish are available and refer clients are referred to South Carolina’s Recovering Professionals Program (RRP) for physicians, nurses, dentists and pharmacists experiencing problems with addiction and chemical dependence.
In Summary
Axis 1 Center of Barnwell provides a customized approach to IOP treatment at little- to no-cost. With its abundance of supportive services and long history in the community, Axis 1 can help clients create sustainable change through sobriety.
