Florence KentuckyThe Basics

Awareness and Discovery is a multi-location counseling and treatment facility in Northern Kentucky that offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse and addiction in its Florence location. A&D recently merged with The Modlin Group and has been treating clients for nearly twenty-five years. With offices available in Newport, Falmouth, Williamstown and home offices in Florence, the multi-phase program is evidence based.

Treatment and Staff

The initial phase of the IOP is six weeks long and involves two-hour group therapy sessions and education classes three times a week. While there is no formal individual therapy component to the IOP, clients usually meet with a counselor one-on-one at least twice during the six weeks. Upon completion of this first phase, clients can step down to the continuing care phase which includes one 90-minute session per week for up to a year.

The lead counselor in the IOP is an LCDC who has been practicing for over a decade. Group sessions typically have a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-six with a maximum of 10 participants. A combination of processing sessions, groups often use CBT techniques with psychoeducation classes and lectures available which discuss topics such as stress management, the 12 steps and PTSD. The counselor usually assigns written homework after each session to be discussed in the next group session. While groups explore the effects of co-occurring disorders, clients who need support for dual-diagnosis are referred to other mental health clinics in the area.

A&D strongly encourages clients to attend 12-step meetings outside of the IOP, or to find other ways of building a peer network of recovery. After a client completes the initial six weeks of treatment, they’re invited to attend weekly low-cost aftercare sessions for up to a year.

Extras

In addition to the IOP, A&D offers DUI services, domestic violence groups, custody and family mediation and theft awareness classes. It plans to start an opioid addiction support group within the month.

A year-long aftercare program allows clients to keep in touch with their counselors and recovery community.

In Summary

A&D’s motto urges clients to “become more aware of the impact of your choices and discover the potential within yourself.” Through its small group sessions and education classes, Awareness and Discovery works to awaken each individual’s personal responsibility and motivation to change. A&D’s programs use traditional therapeutic methods to support long-term recovery for residents across the state of Kentucky.
