The Basics
For over 20 years, Community Recovery has provided comprehensive residential, detox, outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and transitional living options for clients struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Located in the upscale LA suburb of Calabasas, California, Community Recovery provides a seamless continuum of care for the first 12 months of recovery.
Accommodation and Food
Community Recovery’s residential program takes place in what is humbly referred to as community housing. The house is more like a resort than an average residence. Clients share gender-specific bedrooms in the sprawling estate and large bathrooms are also shared. Communal areas are well-appointed, with comfortable couches and large areas in which clients share meals. A gym and pool are available for use. All food is provided, and clients assist in the preparation of most meals.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Community Recovery is unique in that it offers an all-inclusive program that treats clients on an inpatient level for 90 days, followed by a variety of outpatient and transitional living services for the next nine months. In the first week, assessment is performed, with medically assisted detox facilitated if needed. Each person is assigned a team that consists of a therapist, counselor and case manager. They meet a minimum of three times a week with the client, to monitor progress, needs and concerns.
Residents participate in a variety of treatment, including CBT-based group and individual therapy, 12-step meetings and psychiatric sessions. The treatment team works with the client to assess and understand underlying issues, including any co-occurring disorders. Medication management and dual diagnosis support are available if necessary.
The final 45 days of inpatient treatment focus on reintegration, providing the client has been stabilized. Along with their treatment team, the client begins to make decisions about how to continue care after discharge. This may include transitional housing and an outpatient component. The IOP consists of group therapy three times a week, medication management and continued contact with the client’s primary therapist.
The staff consists of two medical doctors, nurses, CADCs, MFTs, MFT interns and various holistic practitioners.
Extras
Clients also engage in educational lectures, as well as recreational activities and holistic modalities. A typical day consists of yoga or other structured exercise, group therapy, 12-step meetings, individual therapy or case assessment, reflection and writing and recreation. Meditation groups are held frequently, as are day-trips along hiking trails, to the beach and other nearby locations.
Community Recovery provides access to four transitional living houses in the greater Los Angeles area, for additional cost. Those moving from the residential treatment facility have first choice of access to these homes over other clients.
In Summary
Community Recovery provides a strong and supportive continuum of care for the first year of recovery. This is quite unusual and Community Recovery prides itself on offering inpatient services at an all-inclusive, relatively low cost. The treatment plans provide supportive, 12-step-based recovery, while group and individual therapy focuses on underlying causes and conditions. Dual diagnosis support and on-site medical care are also provided to ensure that the clients’ every need is met.
