The Basics
Since 2012, Pacific Bay Recovery has offered substance abuse treatment in San Diego, California. PBR provides detox, followed by an 90-day inpatient program which may continue with up to 21 months of outpatient care. PBR focuses on prescription drug addiction and alcohol abuse and offers dual-diagnosis support and utilizes a 12-step modality.
The program at PBR is unique in that all the participants in the residential program are not housed and treated under the same roof. Clients reside in gender-specific houses and are provided daily transportation between the housing site and the main offices. A house and a condo in the Pacific Beach area are available for women, while five condos in Fashion Valley accommodate men. PBR’s main treatment facilities are located in Downtown San Diego.
Accommodations and Food
PBR offers private and semi-private, two-bed, rooms. Each room with has its own bath. Each double-occupancy men’s condo only has two bedrooms with one bed each. Meanwhile, the woman’s Pacific Bay house can handle a maximum of 12 clients, in single and double rooms. All PBR rooms have a walk-in closet but no TVs as those are not allowed.
There is no PBR chef. Clients live must fend for themselves when it comes to meals. PBR provides each resident with $150 per week for groceries, which they can buy for themselves when taken on individual shopping trips. They are also responsible for cooking and preparing their food and cleaning up after themselves. During the nutrition class on that takes place on Thursdays is the only time that clients have food cooked for them. PBR encourages family and friends to be a part of this particular class.
Treatment and Staff
Detox at PBR may last up to a week and is monitored by medical staff. Upon the completion of detox, inpatient clients at PBR have a rigorous treatment schedule. They attend between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, daily. During this window they may meet with personal trainers and nutritionists, as well as their assigned case manager. Psychiatric and medical appointments are also offered during this time, as are individual therapy sessions. Finally, clients may also take part in group sessions that include CBT, DBT, grief and loss workshops, communications skills classes, shame and guilt and denial management seminars, as well as relapse prevention planning. Clients are also permitted go out to AA/NA meetings during their lunch break.
Once they have completed residential treatment, PBR clients may continue on an outpatient basis by entering the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). During IOP they attend treatment two to four hours a day, for two to four days a week, depending on their needs. The IOP offers psychoeducation, and holistic methods like hypnotherapy and yoga (which are also available inpatient) as well as referrals to community services and ongoing social support.
While working with PBR clients may see internal medicine physicians, pain and addiction management specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, MFTs and LADCs. PBR facilities are staffed 24/7 with counselors and medical assistants.
Extras
Different outings are scheduled for Saturdays; such as going to the beach, the movies, or having general recreation time. On Sundays clients may go to museums or to community events, as PBR considers it important not to be isolated from the outside world while in treatment.
In Summary
Though it has only been around a short time, Pacific Bay Recovery thinks in the long term. PBR considers its services to be a continuum—the inpatient and outpatient phases of treatment being presented as a two-year journey of beginning recovery. For those seeking a serious treatment program with luxury living accommodations and a full compliment of services this is an excellent choice.
