The Basics
The Council on Recovery, formerly The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston and Austin Recovery, offers residential and outpatient treatment services for addiction and mental health issues. Located on the 100-acre Hicks Family Ranch in South Austin, Texas, this program provides both short and long term residential care for adults. The facility also has an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and individual therapy available for adults and adolescents.
Accommodations and Food
Located on a beautiful farm, the residential program has 32 beds. Residents live in gender-specific areas, sharing bedrooms and bathrooms between two people. The facility includes a workout area, dining hall, therapy rooms, lecture hall, offices and a common area with a TV. The 51,000 square-foot compound also includes a volleyball court, basketball court, disc golf course, walking trail, labyrinth, a children’s playground and fitness equipment. Smoking is permitted in designated areas.
Three meals a day are provided for residents, which include healthy options like fresh fruit, salad, vegetables and coffee in the mornings. Special dietary requests can usually be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Council on Recovery is a mixture of evidence-based therapies such as CBT, 12-step involvement and mind-body activities like yoga. While detox is not available, recommendations to outside facilities can be made upon request.
The residential program offers two options—a short-term stay of 30 days or a long-term stay of 90 days or more. Treatment includes daily group therapy and one individual session per week. Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, processing and anger management. There are also discussions about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. Support for co-occurring disorders is also offered through talk therapy and medication management. When it comes to the 12 steps, clients attend a mixture of on and off-site AA/NA meetings. Those who participate in the long-term program aim to further develop life skills and begin job searching for life after rehab as well. There is also time to focus on issues around trauma and family dynamics. Once residential care is completed, many clients step down into outpatient.
The six week adult IOP meets four times a week for three hours at a time. There is a morning women’s only session offered as well as a co-ed evening group. All therapy follows a similar structure to the residential programs. Clients are welcome to attend AA/NA meetings during their free time, though they are not required. For adolescents in need of treatment, there are weekly group therapy sessions covering topics such as high risk behavior, as well individual and family therapy and a parenting group.
After the completion of residential or outpatient, clients are invited to participate in aftercare. This includes support groups, workshops or participation in the Alumni Program.
The staff includes Master’s level therapists, psychiatrists and LADCs. IOP maxes out at 32 clients.
Extras
There’s also a family program called the family experience for those who participate in the long-term residential program. This includes a three-and-a-half day intensive workshop to helps family and friends better understand how to deal with addiction and communicate in a healthy way.
In addition to the above, the facility also has the Cradles Project, an outpatient option for pregnant or new mothers. This includes case management, social activities and parenting resources. There is also a special outpatient track for clients over the age of 50. Interventions are also available. Yoga and drumming are a part of the residential experience.
In Summary
The Council on Recovery offers comprehensive, individualized care to treat substance abuse. Both residential and outpatient programs are available, with gender-specific care and a hands-on staff. Although somewhat more expensive than rehabs in its range with similar services, the Council on Recovery still has plenty to offer those in Texas seeking recovery help.
