Mar Vista CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 2015 in Mar Vista, California, NuVu Sober Living offers a high-end transitional living environment for women with co-occurring disorders who are in the early stages of recovery from substance abuse. While based on a 12-step protocol, NuVu Sober Living also takes a holistic approach. Their facility offers plenty of opportunities for yoga, meditation and exercise, with the belief that those disciplines help clients with anxiety and promote healing.

Accommodations and Amenities

The quaint ivory-shingled house has a pristine front yard, with a landscaped lawn and hyacinths resting along a cobblestone pathway. The house accommodates eight women who are paired in distinctively furnished rooms. One room has antique style twin beds, wooden dressers and night lamps. An ornate lamp hangs from the ceiling and provides soft light, giving the room a serene quality. Another room features a black and white motif and contemporary twin beds with fabric headboards.

The fully equipped kitchen has a built-in double electric wall oven and state-of-the-art coffee maker. A daily nutritious breakfast is on hand. An espresso bar and juicer provide Peet’s coffee and fresh orange juice. Lunches and dinners are either group or individual affairs, but clients have access to available food staples that are stocked in the fridge and in the pantries.

The house is located a mile and a half away from the beach, and is in close proximity to many AA/NA meetings, outpatient facilities and local businesses. Amenities include yoga, a workout room, Wi-Fi, Cable TV, a workstation with a house computer, and a huge backyard where clients can create gardens. An onsite house manager is always available to help clients.

Rules and Regulations

NuVu Sober Living prefers clients who have been clean and sober for a 30-day minimum, but those with less time are screened on a case-by-case basis. At NuVu, residents are active and involved in their recovery. Staying in bed all day is frowned upon, and is considered to be behavior that is detrimental to a successful healing process. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and two am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Requirements include participation in meditation, attendance at house meetings and active maintenance of a healthy recovery program. Unemployed clients are required to attend a minimum of five weekly 12-step meetings. Those seeking a more non-12-step approach are encouraged to explore other options, including SMART Recovery and Refuge Recovery, a Buddhist oriented program. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted to ensure compliance. NuVu Sober Living practices a zero tolerance policy.

Outpatient referrals are provided, and NuVu Sober Living provides on-site counseling, at an additional cost. Services are lead by a CADC, who is on staff. Clients receive individualized treatment plans. The program includes case management, individual therapy and life coaching.

Extras

NuVu Sober Living is a member of the Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.
