new lifejpgThe Basics

Founded in 2010, A New Life Sober Living operates six sober living houses in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The facilities house both men and women over 18 in gender-specific houses, including a women’s residence that is a historical mansion built in the 1940s. A New Life believes in the 12-step philosophy of recovery and requires residents to do the same. Their symbol is a red and orange phoenix with flames, and their motto is “out of the ashes, a new life will rise.”

Accommodations and Amenities

Five small brick houses accommodate between seven and 15 men, while the larger women’s residence houses 25 clients. Amenities include bed linens, towels, cleaning supplies, Wi-Fi, free unlimited local and long distance calling, Cable TV, and paper products. There is also access to free laundry facilities at each house. Clients purchase their own groceries, and prepare meals in the fully equipped kitchens. It is common for several residents to pool their resources and prepare dinners as a group.

Rules and Regulations

A New Life’s sober living homes have strict rules to maintain the atmosphere of recovery for clients. Prior to admission, clients must be clean and sober and pass an alcohol and drug test. Length of stay varies, but some reside there for over a year. A New Life Sober provides a family-like atmosphere, where residents hold each other accountable. For the first 30 days, clients must adhere to a strict 11 pm curfew Sundays through Thursdays and midnight on weekends. After that, the weeknight curfew bumps back to 2 am. Failure to comply with curfew can result in immediate discharge. Those who are home are expected to have lights-out by 10 pm.

A New Life is deeply rooted in the 12 steps and residents are required to attend five AA/NA meetings a week,  get a home group, a sponsor, service commitments and actively work the steps. Weekly requirements also include one house meeting the execution of daily household chores, doing volunteer work or getting a job and the maintenance of rent payments. The 30-day cost is $500, and move-in cost is $300, which includes two weeks’ rent, a $125 security deposit, $25 urine drug screen and a $25 administrative filing fee.

No overnight guests are permitted in A New Life Sober Living houses, but residents who are in good standing may be granted a 48 hour overnight pass once every 14 days, subject to management review. Overnight passes are only available to residents with 30 days or more in the program and are only to be taken with a 24 hour notice, an “Overnight Pass Request” form filled out and signed off by at least two members of management, and a payment of $10 to cover the cost of the urine screen that will be taken return.

Extras

Residents have the opportunity to participate in many activities together, including volleyball, baseball, bowling and fishing.

A New Life Sober helps residents find long-term housing through their apartment-style transitional housing program.

In Summary

Former clients of A New Life Sober Living rave about the nurturing atmosphere, caring staff and their roommates whom they came to know as family. These houses are a great choice for men and women seeking affordable, family-style sober living with a 12-step-based approach. However, the rules are pretty strict, so those who have a problem with authority probably want to start their new lives somewhere else.
