The Basics
Founded in 1999 by Liz Huston, Surrender House operates three gender-specific transitional living homes located in Dearborn Heights and Southgate, Michigan. The house receives its name thanks to Huston’s personal journey in recovery. When she found the 12 steps and a Higher Power after struggling for many years with addiction, she finally surrendered and has been clean and sober for over 28 years. At Surrender House, the mission is to inspire clients by demonstrating life-affirming tools, so that they can learn how to live productive lives in recovery.
Accommodations and Amenities
All the Surrender House locations are in quiet residential neighborhoods, close to public transportation, churches, shopping and AA/NA meetings. There are two women’s houses and one male-only house, which is a quaint brick bungalow with white trim. Each residence accommodates seven clients, and has a front porch. Clients are paired in comfortably furnished rooms. Amenities at Surrender House include Wi-Fi, house computer with Internet, Cable TV, laundry facilities, and a phone.
While Surrender House provides secure housing, clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Fully equipped kitchens are available for use. Clients are expected to clean up after cooking and eating. These chores are reinforced to keep the house clean and to teach basic life skills. Each residence has a live-in monitor and a house manager.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must undergo a phone assessment. If approved, an intake appointment is scheduled. Detox must have been completed, and clients must pass a drug screening prior to entry. Surrender House requires a 90-day minimum length of stay. Newly arrived residents must complete 90 AA/NA meetings in 90 days. Finding a sponsor is also mandatory. During this time, the curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Additionally, all clients must attend the Monday night house meeting.
After 30 days, weekly requirements include attending five 12-step meetings, actively working the steps with the sponsor, performing household chores and participating in house meetings. The curfew is midnight from Sundays to Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Clients are encouraged to work, attend school or be enrolled in outpatient treatment, with the belief that productivity is crucial to recovery. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. At Surrender House, there is zero tolerance for those testing positive.
Extras
A non-refundable $100 entry fee is required.
In Summary
With Huston at the helm, Surrender House provides a caring environment for recovering alcoholics and addicts. While the house is based on a 12-step protocol, clients are urged to attend outpatient services so that they can get help for co-occurring disorders. Surrender House is a good choice for clients seeking affordable, 12-step-based sober living.
