Asian American Chemical Dependency Treatment Service

The Basics

The Asian American Chemical Dependency Treatment Service, or ACTS, was established in 2003 and is a non-profit treatment facility located in Lynwood, Washington. The goal at ACTS is to remove the stigma associated with substance abuse and dependency within traditional Asian cultures and provide adolescents and adults with individualized care.

Treatment and Staff

Individuals looking for treatment must go through an assessment process that begins with a phone call to the facility. New clients are placed into one of two program tracks, either the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or traditional outpatient care. Those beginning with the IOP receive three group sessions per week and one individual therapy session for a total of 10 hours. If beginning in outpatient, clients usually begin with one individual and one group therapy session per week. Most of the time, those new to the treatment process have two or three one-on-one sessions with their therapist in order to become familiar with the program before starting in groups. Treatment is designed to be a step down process, and as participants move through the programs, therapists evaluate their progress. Eventually they can reduce their therapy to just one group or individual session per week. The adolescent track is for ages 12 to 18, and addresses substance abuse and prevention as well as anti-social and aggressive behavior, problems with school and truancy.

Programs are individualized, so depending on what each client’s personal needs are therapists use different therapy modalities during individual sessions. Evidence-based practices are used such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and other forms of behavior modification. Group sessions focus on relapse prevention and anger management. In addition, ACTS offers a specialized support group for clients currently prescribed Suboxone. This group offers psychoeducation and counselors work closely with the prescribing physician to address underlying issues. These programs are operated by experienced LPCs and CADCs.

Extras

There is a family program available to all clients when necessary, though family participation only occurs with each client’s consent. ACTS operates a domestic violence and safety group as well. Programs are available in Korean, Samoan and Vietnamese.

In all, Asian American Chemical Dependency Treatment Service is a culturally sensitive facility offering clients a support system that they may not have at home. By recognizing addiction as a disease as opposed to a moral failing to be ashamed of, clients are able to grow substantially, develop healthy habits and end the cycle of addiction.
