Denver ColoradoThe Basics

Addiction Research and Treatment Services (ARTS) is the clinical program for the Division of Substance Abuse under the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado. For over 33 years this program has provided a wealth of resources and services to their community including both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment programs. One such program, The Haven, was founded in 1992 and is a long-term intensive residential program for women and their infants.

Food and Accommodations

The Haven accommodates women and their children in a home-like environment. Clients each receive their own bedroom in a large historical house in an upscale residential neighborhood which they share with their infant. Bathrooms are shared with one other client. There are living rooms with TVs and a kitchen where meals are provided three times a day. Specific foods can be requested.

Treatment and Staff

The Haven is a highly intensive program that typically lasts anywhere from nine months to a year, followed by a year of outpatient care. The program is divided into four progressive phases, guiding the women gradually into sobriety, independence and autonomy. The first phase—orientation—lasts 30 days and consists of an initial assessment, treatment planning, introduction to the program’s philosophy and motivational counseling. Phase II lasts approximately three to four months and focuses on developing problem-solving skills, identifying and addressing behavioral problems and acquiring pro-social attitudes and values. This phase also focuses on addressing gender-specific concerns, reconnecting clients with family members and identifying community support groups.

The third and final phase—the transitional phase—lasts three to five months and focuses on re-socialization, increased contact with the community, money management and employment placement.

Each day is structured, beginning at 5:30 am and ending at 10:30 pm and includes individual and group therapy that focuses on phase-appropriate subjects, family meetings and educational seminars on addiction and recovery. All therapies use CBT methodology. The program also introduces the 12 steps to clients and expects them to attend both on and off-site meetings. Random urinalysis and breathalyzer tests are also administered throughout the program.

The Haven staff consists of an LCSWs, LACs, LCDCs and LPCs.

Extras

In addition to their intensive treatment programs, Haven also offers a number of other services to help clients further improve their lives including vocational education, a GED prep course and a culinary arts program and on-going coordination with various agencies such as child welfare. Clients are also given introductions to financial literacy education, meal prep, household management, computer skills and other recreational activities like yoga and hiking.

In Summary

The Haven program at ARTS provides a safe environment for mothers and their infants to receive care and treatment. The treatment program is multi-phased and focuses on building new skills and new levels of recovery as clients graduate from one phase to the next. This recovery program is tailored specifically for women and mothers requiring substance abuse treatment and clientele are a combination of referrals from the criminal justice system, child-welfare agencies and self-admitted women.
