Pleasanton CaliforniaThe Basics

Axis Community Health offers a ten-week teen Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Since 1972, Axis Community Health has been serving residents of Northern California’s Tri-Valley region, east of San Francisco. It provides low- and no-cost medical and behavioral health services in one of the country’s most affluent areas, including an Adult Drug and Alcohol Recovery Program (known as Adult DARP) in its Livermore, CA location, and a teen IOP (Teen DARP) in its Pleasanton, California location. In operation for nearly ten years, Teen DARP is the only provider of outpatient substance abuse for adolescents in the Tri-Valley region.

Treatment and Staff

The ten-week Teen DARP meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for three hours that include addiction education, group and individual therapy. Upon acceptance into the program, each client is given an individualized treatment plan that includes one-on-one counseling with the frequency adjusted to the client’s needs. Group therapy and education classes are inspired by the Matrix Model, which uses CBT and teaches relapse prevention skills. Clients are also asked to attend two outside 12-step meetings each week and to work with a sponsor. On Fridays, clients and their loved ones attend a family group.

ACH’s Teen DARP conducts random drug testing on clients. After they’ve completed the initial ten weeks of treatment and have maintained abstinence throughout, they can step down to meeting once or twice a week for group therapy—though many choose to remain in the IOP for continued support.

Groups seldom exceed eight participants and are led by addiction counselors—including CADCs—who help clients navigate co-occurring disorders by addressing anxiety, depression and anger-management in group therapy. If clients need more support, they’re referred to ACH’s psychiatric services (located in the same building) for therapy and medication management.

Counselors make a concerted effort to help their young clients improve self-esteem and function better at school. Many clients aren’t able to see how their family systems and school lives are impacting their addiction, and so ACH’s counselors educate them on their responsibilities while helping them develop a sense of autonomy.

Extras

All clients of the IOP are encouraged to attend weekly group meetings for aftercare and can do so free of charge for up to a year. ACH also provides Primary Prevention drug and alcohol education classes and counseling throughout the local school systems and parenting classes for family members of its young clients.

In Summary

Axis Community Health understands that “teens face different pressures, have different patterns of drug use and require different approaches to treatment than adults.” To that end, its counselors are especially attuned to the day-to-day lives of teens and their particular vulnerabilities to addiction. By customizing treatment plans, using evidence-based methods of treatment and structuring the program to adjust to the different levels of care needed in each client’s recovery, Axis Community Health is able to provide a strong and flexibly safety net for teens battling substance abuse.
