The Basics

Anthony Louis Center was founded in 1982 by a group of concerned health professionals hoping to establish a care center for the troubled youth in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The network of treatment locations and services has expanded over the years and now operates with five locations spanning across the state of Minnesota. Branches are available in Burnsville, Woodbury, Plymouth, Eden Prairie with the organization’s headquarters in Blaine. The Blaine facility offers residential treatment for boys and girls while gender specific residential treatment is available in Eden Prairie for girls and the Plymouth location has residential services for boys. All locations offer outpatient services.

Food and Accommodations

ALC has three residential facilities available; the Anthony Louis Center in Blaine which accommodates 22 adolescents (11 beds for boys and 11 for girls), as well as two gender-specific homes known as the “On-Belay” houses. All aim to create a home-like atmosphere wherein clients share a room with one other individual. The female home in Eden Prairie sleeps up to sixteen and the boy’s house in Plymouth sleeps 20 between the ages of 13 and 18. Bedrooms are furnished with full-sized beds, a shared closet and extra space for storage of personal items. Private rooms are available at an extra cost.

Common areas include a recreation room with a cable TV and computers as well as lounging areas throughout the house.  All meals are catered and include healthy food options such as fish, chicken dishes, vegetables, and rice and pasta.

Treatment and Staff

Assessments are available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. Upon admittance, clients are either placed in the residential program or advised to participate in the outpatient track.

The residential program at ALC begins with a 35-45 day primary care program followed by a 60-day to 6-month residential stay. Treatment involves a thorough individualized treatment plans specifically tailored to each client’s needs. Clients are required to attend 12-step meetings twice a day in addition to a 12-step study group. Clients are also required to attend both individual and group therapy sessions. Group topics include time management, drug and alcohol education, anger and stress management, grief and loss, conflict resolution, life skills, relapse prevention, chemical dependency, guilt and shame, process group and self-esteem.

ALC also offers a 30 day outpatient program that consists of two group therapy meetings a week and the option to schedule individual therapy sessions.

Family involvement also plays a large role in recovery and to this end treatment plans include sessions with loved ones at no additional cost as well as educational programs and lectures.

The staff at ALC consists of a clinical psychologist, a registered nurse, LCDCs and LPCs.

Extras

In addition to substance abuse treatment services and programs, ALC also offers care for those with learning disabilities. Additionally, referrals, services for criminal justice clients and programs for youth with poor school attendance are available. Nursing and dietary guidance services are also available.

Additionally, the Anthony Louis Center has a comprehensive educational blog known as Hot Dish which aims to provide easy access to information and resources for the community at large.

In Summary

ALC offers a comprehensive adolescent program with a long list of both residential and outpatient services. The healing environment has an evidence-based approach using traditional therapeutic methods. Through their emphasis on the 12-steps and family involvement, adolescents are sure to find ALC a prime facility for recovery.
