The Basics
Hope Academy is an group of luxury homes that provide faith-based residential substance abuse rehab for 18 to 26 year-old men and women in Orange Country, California. Part of the Hope by the Sea group of drug treatment centers, Hope Academy offers specialized treatment for a population that they believe often overlooked when it comes to recovery—young adults with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. Hope Academy places great emphasis on building job skills and college attendance for all clients. It provides a structured environment in four family-style houses near some of the most beautiful beaches on earth.
Accommodations and Food
Located in various SoCal beach towns near San Diego, Hope Academy’s four residences feature manicured grounds and views of the Pacific Ocean. The facilities strive for a comfy and appealing environment that is conducive to both social interaction with peers and quiet contemplation. The common areas are well appointed and amenities include a tennis court, outdoor dining area and swimming pools. The bedrooms at Hope Academy are almost all shared. Most of the rooms have two full beds, although there are some larger rooms that sleep three clients and a few private rooms as well, available at an additional cost.
Professional chef Julie Ritkes prepares the meals at Hope Academy. She designs nutritious but creative fare, and is a graduate of the Laguna Culinary Arts Professional Chef Program. Ritkes also has experience as a Chef Instructor, a Private Chef and Caterer.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Hope Academy begins with the creation of an individualized treatment plan. If needed, Hope Academy will provide medically supervised detox to new clients. Through medical interventions, meditation, nutrition and exercise, Hope Academy tries to help clients manage their withdrawal as comfortably as possible. Peer support is large part of the Hope Academy program and patients can choose a traditional 12-step approach, an alternative approach with a holistic focus and SMART recovery meetings or a faith-based, Celebrate Recovery treatment track. The clinical staff at Hope Academy has a varied set of backgrounds, so the right treatment approach can be paired with the right client.
The specific psychological modalities practiced at Hope Academy include CBT, DBT, solution-focused therapy and object relations therapy. Residents at Hope Academy will attend group and individual therapy, with the frequency of each depending upon the needs and goals of the client. Residents will also receive recreational therapy, nutrition education, exercise, family therapy and aftercare planning.
Patients with co-occurring disorders receive medication management as well as specific group sessions to meet their needs. If it’s necessary, the staff will work closely with outside medical or mental health professionals to provide care. Hope Academy’s staff includes an MD, a psychiatrist, variously accredited therapists, social workers and even a Christian pastor, and this multi-disciplinary team works together to provide effective care for addicts who need dual diagnosis support.
Extras
After successfully spending a month in recovery (complete with active sponsor and regular peer-support meeting attendance), interested Hope Academy residents can enroll in the center’s college program. Students will attend nearby Saddleback College and live in a supportive, sober living home while attending classes.
For residents who’d rather join the work force or who complete college classes, the center offers employment training. This track covers resume writing, job interviewing, conflict resolution and managing work-related relapse triggers. Hope Academy offers one-on-one coaching opportunities as well. These can include tutoring and academic coaching, life skills training and sobriety coaching.
Hope Academy offers a variety of recreational activities geared toward young adults, including camping, hiking, surfing, skateboarding, sober socializing and frequent trips to nearby beaches.
In Summary
Hope Academy’s specialization in treating people between the ages of 18 and 26 make it a great choice for a young person seeking help for a substance abuse problem. The chance to attend college or gain work training while in a structured environment is invaluable. This makes Hope Academy a perfect option for those who are highly motivated to stay clean and sober and wish to move toward becoming productive members of society.
