ARC ManorThe Basics

ARC Manor was founded in 1974 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. Over the last 40 years, ARC has grown immensely and now offers a variety of treatment programs for substance abuse including residential and outpatient services.

Accommodations and Food

ARC operates a co-ed residential facility that can accommodate up to 10 residents at a time. The two-story building is a renovated former AT&T office. The bottom floor is filled with counselor offices and rooms for group and individual therapy, while the top floor features a cafeteria and bedrooms. Each client has his or her own individual room with a twin bed.

Residents are in charge of maintaining a clean living environment and regularly do household chores on Saturdays. The facility also has a washer and dryer, and ARC provides laundry detergent for residents to use.

Although cell phones and laptops are allowed in the facility, residents are required to leave any personal belongings with the counselors. This precaution is simply to prevent items like cell phones from being stolen and also to help make sure items like mouthwash are not abused. Residents may check these items out in the evenings with the counselor’s permission.

The facility has a phone that residents are allowed to use in the evenings. Residents must schedule a time slot for usage so all the clients who want to make calls are able to do so.

ARC also has staff members on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Counselors go on runs to a convenience store twice a week and residents can give them money for any household items or cigarettes they may want.

Lunch and dinner are provided by an outside food service that prepares a variety of options for each meal. The service can accommodate dietary restrictions or needs. Breakfast is collectively prepared by the residents, with the cooking and cleaning duties split among the clients.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at ARC begins with a phone assessment. If the counselor believes the client needs detox, he or she is referred to the appropriate program. Due to the low number of clients at ARC, the residential program sometimes has a waiting list for prospective clients.

The program initially lasts for two weeks. If the counselor believes the client is in need of additional residential treatment after the first two weeks, the client’s insurance or financial provider is contacted to see if they can afford more time in the program.

Primarily CBT oriented, the residential treatment program consists of both group and individual therapy. In the mornings, clients have three group meetings from 8:30 AM to noon followed by individual sessions as well as 12-step meetings in the afternoon.

ARC’s groups cover a wide variety of topics, including psychoeducation and relapse prevention. Clients attend at least one AA or NA meeting every day either at the facility or somewhere in the community.

The program is dual-diagnosis and ARC has a psychiatrist on staff who attends to clients with co-occurring disorders in need of psychiatric evaluations or prescription medication.

The facility offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) as a step down from residential treatment. This program lasts for a month and meets Monday through Friday. Every weekday, clients in the PHP have group meetings from 8:30 am to noon then individual sessions twice a week.

ARC’s next step down is their Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The length of the IOP is based on client need but it always meets three times a week in a group setting. While in this program, clients can still have individual sessions if requested. Both the PHP and IOP meetings are larger groups and generally have between 10 to 30 clients in each meeting.

If at any time, the counselor or client decides a higher level or care is necessary, ARC allows clients to transition back into the residential or PHP programs.

ARC also offers an adolescent group program. This group is aimed for clients aged 19 and under struggling with substance abuse. The group meets twice a week and focuses on addressing peer pressure, school adjustment, self-esteem, living without alcohol and drugs, developing new friendships and rebuilding family relationships. These meetings are led by a counselor and consist of at least four adolescents. This program can last for as long as the client needs, and ARC recommends at least 12 to 18 hours of treatment.

ARC usually has eight to nine counselors on staff. The counselors are all LADCs, some of whom are Master’s-level. The counselors and staff are also trained to address issues pertaining to the LGBT community.

Extras

The facility also has a women’s group that meets once a week for 90 minutes.

This group addresses issues that pertain specifically to women battling addiction. Some of the topics covered include self-esteem, codependency, stress management, denial and stigmas. The group has a maximum of 10 to 12 clients at any time. Clients are encouraged to stay in this group for as long as needed.

ARC also offers outpatient counseling for criminal justice clients and repeat offenders who have substance abuse issues.

The residential program offers recreational activities for residents twice a week. These activities include bowling, shopping at thrift stores and putt-putt golfing in the summer.

Although ARC does not offer a formal aftercare program, the facility does have a relapse prevention program for alumni who find themselves at risk of relapse. The meetings last for 90 minutes and meet once a week. During these meetings, counselors focus mostly on building detailed plans for preventing relapse and identifying each client’s triggers. The relapse prevention program is relatively small, with between 10 and 12 clients per group. ARC recommends clients stay in this group for eight to 24 weeks.

The residential program offers a family program entailing a family group meeting every Tuesday as well as family visitation times on Saturday. The group meetings are lead by a counselor and consist of family members for each client in the program as well as the clients themselves. These meetings focus on communication issues and substance abuse education.

In Summary

ARC Manor is a comprehensive facility apt to treat almost any degree of addiction and substance abuse. The myriad programs allow ARC to address client’s issues at every step of recovery. Also, the small size of the residential program provides the residents with a high level of individualized care. Another added perk is the relapse prevention program, which offers a high level of continuing care after they step down from the IOP program. There is truly something for everyone at ARC Manor.
