The Basics
Another Way, Inc. (AWI) is one of a network of clinics under the umbrella of Addiction Treatment Systems, an organization providing substance abuse treatment and care across the state of Maryland. AWI has been serving the community of Takoma Park, Maryland—a small suburban area in Washington DC—since 1995. The outpatient program offered by AWI begins its treatment program with methadone assistance and follows up with a solid outpatient program that incorporates individual and group therapy using evidence-based methods.
Treatment and Staff
Outpatient treatment at AWI is based on individualized programs developed for each client’s needs following an assessment. The program is long-term and lasts anywhere from six months to a year. Clients are administered methadone daily to help with cravings and withdrawal symptoms from narcotics. Clients also attend daily individual therapy sessions with an assigned counselor to work towards their recovery goals as laid out in their unique plan. Group sessions are held twice a day and typically discuss topics such as relapse prevention, drug education, health issues, and a specific women’s focus group. Clients are also required to take a urinalysis test once a month to ensure sober behaviors outside of the program.
All therapies used at AWI are based in CBT methodology, however clients may be referred to outside psychiatrists or psychologists if they are not demonstrating significant progress from therapy at AWI.
The 12-steps are not included in the treatment program at AWI, however, clients are encouraged to attend meetings both during and after treatment to maintain a sober and healthy lifestyle and a sober fellowship.
The staff at AWI consists of licensed nurses, Master’s-level clinicians and certified counselors.
In Summary
AWI’s medication-assisted treatment via methadone is ideal for individuals requiring assistance with symptoms of withdrawal from opiates followed by a substantial outpatient program. Though AWI does not offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) option, through urinalysis screening and individual and group therapy, clients receive a well-rounded and evidence-based approach to help them on their path to recovery and sobriety.
