My Brother’s House Sober Living Review

My Brother’s House Sober Living was founded by recovering addict and long-term State Correctional Institute volunteer Ron Yucca. This is a recovery housing program for men living in North Versailles, Pennsylvania. My Brother’s House operates four sober living homes which provide 12-step-based programming options along with a strong foundation in recovery while clients learn how to successfully transition back into their communities as sober people.

Accommodations and Amenities

My Brother’s House operates four three-quarter homes. The facilities are single family homes that have between five and seven beds in each. The houses have both single and shared bedrooms (shared rooms max out at two clients per space), and clients share full bathrooms.

The homes have a number of amenities like living rooms with TV and cable, laundry rooms, full kitchens and dining rooms, porches and workout areas. There are also meditation rooms and quiet areas throughout each of the facilities. Some of the facilities are also situated right on the local bus lines which many find convenient.

My Brother’s House does not provide food for clients.

Rules and Regulations

Residents in the program have to commit to certain rules in order to remain in the house. First and foremost, they have to maintain their sobriety and keep the household peaceful and clean. This also includes keeping the environment safe and violence-free.

During the first 30 days of moving into a facility clients are not allowed to leave the house unless they are accompanied by staff or a sponsor. Additionally, these 30 days are when clients need to secure full-time employment, continued education, volunteer work or be engaged in other wholesome activities. Clients are expected to submit to regular drug screenings. Other rules include prohibitions on: romantic involvement with other clients or with staff members, having any knowledge of other client’s financial affairs, or borrowing money from other clients.

Upon moving into one of the homes, clients commit to actively being involved in the 12-step community, getting a sponsor and being in frequent communication with that sponsor. There are mandatory house meetings every week that consist of Big Book study and other on-site AA meetings. There are daily chores that need to be completed and signed off on, and clients must clean up after themselves immediately after using common areas such as the kitchen.

Clients are responsible for coordinating sessions with therapists, medical doctors or case managers. In addition, medications are not managed by the staff of the facility, and clients need to be responsible enough to take their own medications as prescribed.

Curfew is 10:00 pm on weeknights and midnight on the weekends. After the initial 30 days, overnight passes can be granted.

There is always a staff member on the premises, and the facility can provide referrals to outpatient programs if needed.

In Summary

My Brother’s House provides large and comfortable homes for men who are new to recovery, and requires clients to be accountable and take responsibility for their lives without being overbearing. This program is based on the 12 steps, and provides a space for clients to create the lives they’ve always wanted to live while still being supported.
