Sojourner House Review
Sojourner House is a faith-based program for families who have struggled with the effects of addiction located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sojourner House is named after activist Sojourner Truth and was originally established in 1991 by a group of women who were members of the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. Programming through SH includes an inpatient rehab, long term housing for homeless women and families, dual diagnosis treatment, children’s services and supportive housing. These programs help women and their children get back on their feet while receiving comprehensive addiction services, case management and community based assistance.
Accommodations and Food
Clients and their families who are part of Sojourner House and Sojourner MOM reside in individual apartments that can accommodate up to four people, a mother and three children, for up to six months. The apartments house up to 14 families at capacity. The units have bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, kitchens and full bathrooms.
Food is provided by community-based donations and other not-for-profit agencies.
Treatment and Staff
Programming is individualIed and evidence based, and includes education, 12-step support and therapy. The program is a three-pronged approach includes counseling, both in a group and individual setting, parenting and skills classes, and life skills training.
Sojourner House is a faith-based program that offers voluntary bible study and church services, though attendance of the spirituality class is mandatory. The addiction program is a six month track that has onsite AA and NA meetings, and group therapy that addresses relapse prevention, coping skills and managing triggers. Parents receive childhood development classes, and learn communication skills.
Sojourner MOMS (Motivation, Opportunity, Mentoring and Spirituality) is the next step in the program that provides women in recovery and their children with permanent housing while still having access to community services. This track promotes self-sufficiency, and transitional services while working on strengthening family relationships.
The supportive housing program is a referral program that is specifically for women who have struggled with addiction and homelessness, have attended a treatment program prior to admission, and have 90 days of sobriety under their belts. This program is also for mothers who have a minimum of two kids, since the units are all three bedrooms. In addition to the educational services and therapy, this track also focuses on clients with a co-occurring disorder.
The large support staff of Sojourner House includes counselors, family support specialists, case managers, peer recovery specialists, and child care workers.
Extras
As clients are in therapy or attending classes, there is childcare provided. There are also vocational training opportunities.

Sojourner House is a program that gives women the opportunity to get their lives back on track after being affected by addiction, mental illness or homeslessness. These are long term services, of six months or more, that truly provide a multitude of assistance for the families, including education, counseling, and case management.
