POWER Outpatient Review

POWER (Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery) is a women’s only treatment facility located in Pittsburgh. It is a holistic and 12-step based rehab that offers both residential and outpatient services. Outpatient care includes a full time Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and step-down standard outpatient care. Treatment includes a group and individual therapy, expressive therapies, peer recovery support and aftercare planning.

Treatment and Staff

Potential clients go through an intake process that assesses each client’s needs and offers a treatment plan, or if the services provided at POWER aren’t appropriate, they recommend an outside agency that can better serve their needs. For the most part, the assessment begins with an over the phone interview and is completed at the facility. However, in the instances that clients are referred by a hospital or family services, the assessment may take place in the client’s home.

The PHP is a day program that requires between 10 and 25 hours or programming each week. The IOP is considered a step-down from the PHP, and is five and a half to nine and a half hours of treatment weekly, and the standard OP is generally between one and five hours of programming. Clients in the intensive outpatient tracks breakfast and lunch is provided.

As with the residential programming, outpatient tracks focus on women’s issues during group and individual therapy. Topics vary from trauma, parenting, self esteem and empowerment, self care, social stigma, housing and vocational training.

The outpatient programming options are individualized and are slightly more flexible to accommodate clients personal lives. Treatment includes a variety of therapies and approaches, such as art and music therapy, expressive arts therapy, relapse prevention, meditation and mindfulness. Psychiatric services and medication management are available throughout treatment.

Extras

POWER may offer things like childcare and transportation to clients and their families, which also includes bus tickets. There are also a number of holistic and therapeutic activities that are yoga, Tai Chi and relaxation techniques.

Family therapy and aftercare planning are included in treatment. In addition to the standard treatment offered at this facility there are also specialty programs for women who are transitioning out of jail.

In Summary

The outpatient programming at POWER is customized to accommodate clients needs while providing trauma-informed care and treatment that addresses women specific issues. The dual diagnosis care at this facility are comprehensive and help with transitions in between levels of treatment, and within the community.
