POWER House Review
POWER is a Pittsburgh based women’s only treatment facility. It offers comprehensive addiction and co-occurring disorder treatment. The POWER House residential program consists of structured daily activities and therapy, 12-step support, life skills training, and trauma-informed care. Treatment includes group and individual therapy in addition to psychiatric services, all set within a very supportive, gender-specific environment.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facility provides private bedrooms for up to 25 clients. All the bedrooms are comfortably and gracefully furnished. The large facility is spacious with several common spaces throughout the building. This includes a lounge living room space with couches and TV, office with shared computers and printers, playroom for visiting children, exercise area and relaxation garden. There are also laundry facilities on-site.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the shared dining room. All meals are prepared on site by kitchen staff.
Treatment and Staff
While in the residential level of treatment clients wake up at 6 am and immediately start with a variety of group therapy sessions and activities. Daily exercise is factored into every clients schedule along with meditation, 12-step meetings that are held on site, social activities and life skills classes.
The residential program is designed to last for up to six months, during which time clients really focus on establishing a foundation for continued recovery. Clients attend groups that cover common issues that women face after struggling with addiction. Group topics include relapse prevention, self esteem and self empowerment, identifying triggers, discovering underlying issues for addiction, parenting and childcare, boundaries and more. There are life development classes, vocational training, health and wellness classes and activities, and peer recovery support.
During the assessment phase prior to admission to the residential program clients a psychiatric evaluation. The medical director of POWER House is a psychiatrist who offers frequent consultations and medication management. There is also a mobile health unit that comes to the facility twice a month for standard medical services and referrals.
Therapeutic approaches include CBT, DBT, expressive therapies, art and music therapy, and mindfulness. The multidisciplinary staff is comprised of medical doctors and RNs, LPCs, LCSWs, and peer support specialists.
Extras
Family education and counseling is included in each client’s personalized treatment plan. There is also a resource coordinator who helps clients establish work, educational services and housing.
Health and wellness activities includes yoga, Tai Chi and meditation. Aftercare and discharge planning is included.
In Summary
The residential program at POWER House specifically addresses women’s issues within a safe and supportive unit that caters to their needs. The facility itself is comfortable and while in treatment clients learn a bevy of new life skills that help them maintain their sobriety.
