POWER Recovery Review
POWER stands for Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery. It is a gender-specific addiction and trauma treatment network for women located in Pittsburgh. Programming includes residential and outpatient care that use holistic approaches combined with traditional and 12-step based protocols. Clients can expect strength-based, individualized treatment plans, as well as psychiatric services and comprehensive aftercare.
Accommodations and Food
The private residential facility offers 25 beds all set in private bedrooms. The facility is furnished comfortably and decorated with bright, cheerful color throughout the building. The large campus has a quiet garden and several common spaces both within and outside the facility. This includes a playroom, recreation room and yoga studio. Other shared areas include the living room with TV and couches, and office space with computers and printers. While clients are allowed to bring their cell phones to treatment, there are pay phones on site and laundry facilities.
All meals are provided by the facility.
Treatment and Staff
The intake begins with an over the phone assessment by a screening professional. Based on the assessment, or referral from an outside agency, there is an in-person assessment either at the facility or at their residence. Once placed in the program clients either begin in the residential phase of treatment or one of the outpatient levels of care, which consists of a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Residential care is staff 24 hours a day. This program offers daily group and individual therapy, 12-step meetings, meditation, life skills classes, exercise and recreation and social activities. The PHP is a day program that offers between 10 and 25 hours per week, and the step-down IOP runs between five and nine hours per week. The higher levels of outpatient care include breakfast and lunches as well.
Group therapy sessions cover issues like trauma, self esteem, relationships, social stigma and relapse prevention. There is also medication management and regular visits with a psychiatrist to monitor each client’s progress on medication. Other elements of programming include co-occurring disorder specific treatment, treatment for women transitioning out of incarceration, mindfulness, and art and music therapy.
Staff includes recovery specialists, LPCs, and peer mentors. All staff members are in recovery themselves, with a majority of them having gone through this program.
