Harbor House Review
Homeward Pikes Peak is a not for profit agency that provides comprehensive addiction treatment along with services for the homeless. One of the residential programs takes place at a facility called Harbor House. This is a safe, substance-free home for men and women. Above all, it offers independence for residents as they go through an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders. The residential track offers clients an opportunity to learn valuable life skills, work through the beginning stages of their recovery in a safe environment, and connect to community resources.
Accommodations and Food
The Harbor House residential program offers transitional townhouses in central Colorado Springs. These apartments provide about 70 men and women a private living space that is monitored and managed by clinical staff. The units are usually for two clients or families, as long as the head of the household qualifies for the program. They provide kitchenettes, and en suite bathrooms. There are also several common areas around the complex, like a small playground and basketball hoop.
The food is donated to HPP and given to clients in this program.
Treatment and Staff
Clients must apply through HUD by meeting a series of qualifications. In order to be eligible to live at Harbor House, they need to have been homeless, or living in a shelter, for a total of 12 months or four times over a period of three years. Other qualifications include being institutionalized in a hospital, incarceration, or in a substance abuse program as long as they also meet the guidelines for homelessness.
Clients can stay in this program for up to 18 months. During this time they have to remain completely free of drugs and alcohol. Clients are referred to an IOP and attend for the first six weeks of their residence. Upon completion, the hope is that they are able to shift their focus to finding a job, attending job readiness seminars and trainings.
The IOP provides recovery support such as AA and NA, align with individual and group therapy. Group therapy address issues like relapse prevention, coping skills, managing emotions, and building healthy relationships.
Harbor House residential has on-site managers 24 hours a day. There are also case managers who aid in connecting clients to community services.
Extras
Clients who have lost touch or connection with their families due to their addiction or homelessness are offered family restoration services.
In Summary
Harbor House gives residents a safe place to live as they learn how to be sober, all while learning new skills, building a community, and saving money. Not only do clients learn how to live independently, but they are empowered by the connection to community resources.
