The Basics
Founded by CEO David Miller in 2014, and located in Santa Monica, California, Atlas House is a high-end sober living house that caters to a small group of men. Miller, who is in recovery, believes that a standard approach does not fit all and clients are encouraged to pursue their own recovery protocol, including 12-step meetings, Refuge Recovery and SMART Recovery.
Accommodations and Amenities
The house is located a few minutes away from the beach and across the street from an AA clubhouse. No more than five clients are accommodated at one time. Atlas House sports Feng Shui design, as evident by the precise placing of luxurious yet sparse furnishings. The living room black leather couches and armchairs and a flat screen TV. There are two double-occupancy rooms and one single. The rooms are furnished with twin beds and have shared closet space and natural wood dressers. One room has a patio door, while the other features spacious windows.
While the house provides healthy food, and accommodates vegetarians, clients are responsible for their own meal preparation, which helps them learn basic life skills. Food is cooked in a fully equipped kitchen. Amenities include a Jacuzzi, an outdoor meditation patio, an iMac with Wi-Fi, HD TV with sports channels, XBOX One, house beach cruisers and surfboards. Besides Miller, the house includes an evening manager.
Rules and Regulations
At Atlas House, clients in different stages of recovery are considered for admission, provided that they have at least one day clean and sober and are not in need of medical detox services. Atlas House asks for a minimum of a 90-day length of stay.
Requirements include participation in a Monday morning yoga class and morning meditation Tuesdays through Fridays. A house meeting follows the 20-minute meditation groups where residents discuss their goals for the day, as well any house concerns. Employed clients or those enrolled in a full-time Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) must attend a minimum of three weekly recovery support group meetings (including 12-step, SMART Recovery or Refuge Recovery). Unemployed clients must participate in five weekly meetings. The curfew is midnight seven days a week.
Drug testing is conducted several times a week. Atlas House uses the services of Millennium Health for urine and drug screenings. In addition to housing, services provided by Atlas House include job coaching and passion development mentoring for those who have lost their joy for life during active addiction. Atlas House provides referrals to local IOP’s including Living Rebos, Haven House Addiction Treatment, BLVD Treatment Center and Westside Treatment.
Extras
The residents benefit from structured activities like weekend hikes and beach days. Transportation to local IOP facilities is provided.
Atlas House is a member of the Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.
In Summary
Atlas House’s Miller is passionate about recovery and understands that the one-size-fits-all approach does not suit everyone. Not only that, but the house itself sports a very Zen-like, intimate atmosphere, where men can learn to bond and build a sense of brotherhood. Additionally, for those interested in pursuing alternative recovery protocols, Atlas House is the perfect spot.
