Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital Review
Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is northwest Nevada’s newest treatment facility for mental health issues, substance abuse, trauma-informed care and eating disorders. Programming includes inpatient and outpatient services for adolescents and adults, including older adults. The older adult program is known as Transitions. A specialized track for clients who are 55 and older, it focuses on those who are having a tough time dealing with big life transitions, such as grief and loss, divorce, and illness; or a variety of mental health issues.
Accommodations and Food
Transitions clients live on campus in the brand new facility that accommodates up to 101 adult clients. Older adults are situated in an area in the hospital that is quiet and private. Clients share bedrooms and have easy access to the bathrooms, common areas, dining room and outdoor.
Recreation takes place in the large gymnasium that has yoga, Tai Chi and meditation. There are laundry facilities on site. Common spaces within the senior wing include a living room style room with TV, and areas for reading.
The cafeteria serves three meals a day. Clients dine in their appointed groups and have a selection to choose from per meal time. There are also healthy snacks and a variety of beverage choices.
Treatment and Staff
Throughout this program clients zero in on new coping skills through a series of activities and therapy. The Transitions program is individualized and entails a lot of one on one attention from the staff. Common issues addressed in this program include anxiety, dementia related conditions, dual diagnosis, psychosis, depression and schizoaffective disorder.
Group therapy takes place every day. These groups cover topics that include how to cope with grief and loss, socialization, problem solving, and tips to manage anger, agitation and irritability. Clients learn different life skills to handle stress, learn social skills, and self care skills. For Transitions clients who are also dealing with an addiction issues, there are detox services and specialized chemical dependency tracks.
Evidence-based protocols are used within this program. This includes CBT and trauma-informed care approaches. There is also daily recreational therapy and art therapy.
Staff includes LCSWs, dietitians, psychiatrists, ancillary nurses, RN’s, internists, and a pharmacist.
Extras
Family education is included in the Transitions program, as well as discharge planning and aftercare. Aftercare may include follow up therapy sessions.

As one gets older they may struggle with changes and problems that come into their lives. This can be a scary experience, especially when a person is also dealing with a mental illness. Transitions aims to ease seniors through these changes in a safe and caring environment, and offers valuable life skills along the way.
