House of Sophrosyne Review

Located across the river from Detroit in the city of Windsor, Ontario, House of Sophrosyne is a non-profit residential treatment facility. It specializes in the care of women over the age of 16 struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as co-occurring trauma. The facility promotes an bio-pscyho-social-spiritual model of care that emphasizes the client’s strengths, accountability and community. Founded in 1978, Sophrosyne offers a continuum of care that includes residential care, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and sober living. The 12-step recovery model is an integral aspect of the programming.

Accommodations and Food

Situated in an A-frame building in a quiet suburban neighborhood, Sophrosyne offers a supportive and stable environment ideal for recovery. With the recent purchase of a new building, the facility can now accommodate up to 30 clients. Residents share spacious bedrooms equipped with twin-sized beds, a desk, plenty of natural light and an ensuite bathroom and lounge.

Residents enjoy three healthy meals a day. The facility can accommodate clients with specific dietary restrictions, though a doctor’s note must be provided.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients undergo a comprehensive screening and in-person intake interview that includes physical and psychological exam as well as a complete account of substance use, personal and family history. From there, the Sophrosyne team determines the best possible personalized treatment plan tailored to address the unique needs, goals and circumstances of the individual.

While the typical length of care throughout the entire curriculum is five weeks, the residential program lasts 35 days. The facility does not offer a detox program. New clients must be at least three days sober.

House of Sophrosyne employs a strengths-based approach that integrates an array of therapeutic methods including holistic practices, evidence-based therapies, recreation and psychoeducation. Residents participate in individual and group sessions. Family and friends are welcome to join a group session to gain a greater understanding of the recovery process. Psychoeducation courses focus on nutrition therapy, diet, communication, addiction, relapse prevention techniques, stress and anger management. It’s worth mentioning, the facility offers a specialized trauma track.

The Sophrosyne team is made up of case workers, nurses and addiction specialists. Medication management is not available.

Extras

Sophrosyne places an emphasis on physical fitness and recreation. As a result, residents can expect access to yoga, Reiki, acupuncture, mindfulness meditation, art and music therapy.

While there is a waiting list for most clients, House of Sophrosyne accepts pregnant women and mothers with no wait.

In Summary

The House of Sophrosyne in Windsor, Ontario is a non-profit treatment organization for women struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. Above all, the organization offers a comprehensive continuum of care in addition to a safe haven ideal for recovery and rebuilding.
