McCallum Place Adult Inpatient Review

Acadia Healthcare’s McCallum Place has two facilities in the US; one in St. Louis, Missouri, and the other in Kansas City, Kansas. McCallum Place is a comprehensive eating disorder treatment center that caters to men, women, and adolescents. The McCallum Place adult inpatient program in Kansas City is an individualized service that offers evidence-based approaches, meal support and holistic treatment. McCallum Place is named after the founder, Dr. Kimberli McCallum, who is a board certified adolescent and adult psychiatrist with an extensive background in eating disorder treatment.

Accommodations and Food

There are 22 adult beds in the program. Clients reside in the hospital in a wing that is entirely separate from the adolescent clients. The adult side of the facility offers private bedrooms that are furnished with twin beds and dressers. Common spaces throughout the building include a fitness center and yoga room, along with quiet sitting areas and a place to watch TV.

Clients eat fresh meals every day in the on-site campus dining room. It goes without saying, the atmosphere is supportive and inviting, making the experience as stress free as possible. A staff dietitian designs the menus. There are also supported snack times throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

The adult residential track offers a great deal of personal attention with activities that focus on each client’s needs. There are at least three individual sessions with an eating disorder specialist per week, and at least one meeting with the staff dietitian. In addition, clients receive three individual sessions with the staff psychiatrists, and a weekly exam with McCallum Place’s medical doctors.

Once the client is stable, he or she is able to exercise and participate in recreational activities. This includes yoga, daily walks, or working out in the fitness center. For clients who need specialized care, there are options in the beginning stages of the refeeding process, or for those who purge on a regular basis.

As one would expect, after each of the supported meals, clients have a process session to discuss how they are feeling about their experiences. There are also groups that offer relapse prevention, psychodrama, mindfulness and meditation, dance and movement therapy, art and music therapy, overcoming shame and a nutrition group.

It’s worth mentioning, treatment is based on CBT and DBT approaches, with a staff-to-client ratio of four-to-one. Board certified psychiatrists, LPCs, eating disorder specialists, movement therapists, art therapists, nutritionists and fitness experts oversee the adult inpatient program here.

Extras

There are expressive group therapy sessions the second Saturday of the month on campus.

Finally, the aftercare program can include the step-down option of going into the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at McCallum Place.

In Summary

Above all, the adult inpatient treatment program allows for clients to be in a very supportive place while stabilizing and getting back on a healthy track. McCallum staff encourage and guide them through treatment without shame or guilt. In turn, the participants learn how to help themselves through an array of classes and therapies.
