Gifford Street Wellness Center Review
Acadia’s Gifford Street Wellness Center of New Bedford, Massachusetts is an outpatient addiction treatment facility. It aids adult men and women who are struggling with opioid addiction. Treatment at this location includes medication assisted care using methadone, Suboxone and Vivitrol, in conjunction with therapy and educational services. Experienced addiction counselors and medical professionals facilitate treatment. It’s worth mentioning, treatment is available in both English and Spanish.
Treatment and Staff
There are four locations that offer these services in the Southeast Massachusetts area. Gifford Street Wellness Center works hard to ensure a smooth and comfortable transition to treatment, and to provide a stress free atmosphere once clients are there. There are some requirements that potential clients need to meet in order to qualify for care.
The clinic serves adults who are 18 and older, and have struggled with their opioid addiction for at least one year. At the first meeting, incoming clients need to be in the state of withdrawal for at least 20 hours. This rule does not apply to pregnant individuals.
At the intake clients fill out paperwork then submit to a medical exam, TB test and leave a urine sample. During this stage there is a bio-psycho-social evaluation that collects information regarding clients personal health history, past experiences in other treatment facilities, mental health and issues related to their addiction.
Once in the program clients are prescribed a medication to aid in stopping the cravings that one experiences with opioids. The dosage is customized to accommodate each client’s specific needs. As clients progress through the program, they begin to step down in their medication regimen. In some cases, clients may switch to a different medication.
During their time in the program clients go to individual therapy with their assigned addiction counselor, as well as group sessions. The groups meet once a week, and individual therapy may take place once per week or twice a month.
These sessions address things like achievements or setbacks in their treatment, relapse prevention, identifying triggers and learning how to apply coping skills. Since treatment is individualized the amount of time in the program depends on each person and their progress and experience.
The staff consists of a medical director, nurses and addiction counselors.
In Summary
The Gifford Street Wellness Center’s addiction program caters to adults who are ready to live a life that is free of substance abuse. They provide standard medications and therapy in order to improve the chance of their clients remaining clean and sober. Throughout treatment clients assess their progress and learn a series of new life and coping skills while receiving support.
