Lakeland Behavioral Health Hospital Adolescent Residential Review
Acadia’s Lakeland Behavioral Health Hospital of Springfield, Missouri, offers adolescent psychiatric treatment programs in an intensive inpatient setting, as well as a residential environment that focuses on reintegration into their communities. The adolescent residential track is broken into five different levels of care for boys and girls between the ages of nine to 20. Clients at this level of care receive individualized programming, group and individual therapy, extensive family therapy, coping and life skills training and, if needed, substance abuse treatment.
Accommodations and Food
Between the inpatient and residential adolescent wing there are 102 beds in total. Clients sleep in gender-specific rooms with clients that are of the same, or appropriate, ages. All the bedrooms sleep two clients in each, and are very simply furnished with twin beds and small dressers.
The campus contains an accredited private school that holds classes daily. Clients have access to the gymnasium with a basketball court, and the swimming pool during recreation. There is also a common area that acts as a living room with couches, chairs, books and TV.
Three meals a day are eaten in the campus cafeteria. There are a few options offered per meal time. Specific dietary restrictions are honored.
Treatment and Staff
The inpatient program for adolescents is broken down into four groups, on a five tier level down system. With each tier clients reach by earning points they are given more privileges. They are boys between the ages of nine and 14, boys who are 14 to 20, girls from nine to 20, and sexually maladaptive boys. On a daily basis the clients attend group therapy and process groups, relapse prevention, anger management, creative expression or recreational therapy, and relationship building. There are also individualized medication management plans and crisis management services if needed.
The residential phase of treatment starts the day with a goals group and is followed up by a trauma group. Following morning activities clients go to school for about five hours. The day concludes with recreational therapy or free time.
Additional groups throughout the week may cover topics like self esteem, image, problem solving, assertiveness, and anger management. On certain days clients have creative arts activities and other expressive therapies. Life skills classes offered consist of cooking, money management and how to manage stress. Common approaches are CBT, DBT, EMDR, and Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Staff of the residential includes Master’s-level therapists who are LCSW, psychiatrists, psychologists, case managers, recreational therapists, educators and behavioral health techs.
Extras
Family therapy is factored into each client’s individualized treatment plan. In this level of care there are opportunities for off campus activities and group sports clinics.
In Summary
The recreational program for adolescents at Lakeland focuses on their strengths and blends a combination of traditional and holistic approaches. The protocols are age appropriate and address underlying issues with not only the client but their families as well. Throughout the program clients are offered the opportunity to earn points and privileges that help build their self esteem and personal empowerment.
