Harmony HouseThe Basics

Founded in 2005, Harmony House offers sober living for men in a quiet, suburban neighborhood in Levittown, Pennsylvania. The house typically attracts clients ages 25 and over, mature clients between the ages of 18 and 25 are considered, on a case-by-case basis.

Accommodations and Amenities

Harmony House accommodates 11 men in a blue single-family house that includes a dining room, living room, kitchen, two bathrooms and a large backyard with a garden. Between two and three men share rooms that have twin beds, closets and dressers. The living room has a TV with cable as well as comfortable couches and lamps.

Residents purchase and prepare their own meals in the spacious kitchen and label food with their names to store in the communal fridge. Amenities include a computer with Wi-Fi, an outdoor gas grill, washer, dryer, a weight-lifting bench and free weights. Smoking is allowed on the back patio, and butt cans are provided.

Rules and Regulations

Harmony House requires a minimum 90-day time commitment, but most men stay between six and 18 months. The facility collaborates with local outpatient drug rehabs and psychiatrists and provides recommendations for residents who need a little more help than a structured living environment can offer.

Residents progress through four levels during their stay, beginning with level four. This is a seven-day minimum blackout period where newcomers acquaint themselves with house rules. Additionally, an approved house member must escort them when they leave the house. Level three residents are required to obtain sponsors, attend five weekly 12-step meetings, secure employment and comply with outpatient treatment, psychiatric services, parole officers (if appropriate) and other obligations. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. This period lasts 90 days.

Level two residents attend a minimum of three weekly 12-step meetings, continue outpatient care, work with sponsors, maintain employment and follow house rules. There is no curfew for residents at this level. Finally, level one clients sustain all the positive goals that they have worked for, which include working with their sponsor, going to meetings, being of service, maintaining employment or attending school.

Harmony House participates in medication-assisted treatment and manages men on methadone or those prescribed suboxone. Methadone clients must have been on the medication for at least 30 days and stable before they can move in. Harmony House does not evict residents who test positive on alcohol and drug screenings. Rather, those clients undergo a level five protocol if they are not considered a danger to themselves or others, and are receptive to aid.

Extras

Harmony House provides a weekly relapse prevention group on the premises that is open to all residents and alums. The men of Harmony House take great pride in yard work and plant flowers and vegetables in the garden.

In Summary

Besides offering a 12-step-based approach, Harmony House supports those who require medication management and transitional care, believing that those services are vital to clients who just can’t stay clean and sober on the steps alone. This is an unusual combination, so those seeking a 12-step friendly program where they can slowly transition off drugs can be comfortable here.
