CooperRiis Review

CooperRiis is a program that caters to those who have a primary diagnosis of  mental illness, though it does offer dual diagnosis treatment services as well. There are two locations in North Carolina. The Asheville facility provides a whole person approach using strength based recovery methods. The residential track has a series of holistic and community based programming options for adults, with the culmination of the program resulting in a transitional housing option. All treatment plans are customized to accommodate each client’s needs through a series of therapeutic options.

Accommodations and Food

The Asheville campus is on four acres of heavily wooded land close to the University of North Carolina and the downtown area of Asheville. Each of the 24 residential bedrooms is private and includes an en suite bathroom. The residential and treatment wings are all in the same four story building. Common spaces throughout the campus contain an art studio, music room, vegetable, herb and flower gardens, wood shop and workout room.

Meals are served in the dining room that has several round tables that seat four clients. The meals are created with the client’s health in mind by the facility’s Integrative Health Director. A good deal of the menus contain fresh vegetables and ingredients that are grown in the campus gardens. There is also a limit on caffeine and sugar.

Treatment and Staff

The program at CooperRiis is comprised of individual and group therapy, medication management, community work and service, social engagement and expressive therapies. There are 20 hours of community work factored into each treatment week. At the initial assessment clients choose the work they would like to do within the community. This can include working in various kitchens and making food, caring for the animals that live on campus,  landscaping, building drums, repairing houses and furniture, or creating art.

There are several group sessions per week. These groups are divided into general groups and specialized groups. Groups are often offered in-office or out in nature. Specialized groups are characterized as the Wellness Action Recovery Plan (WRAP), dual diagnosis support, and DBT groups.

For those who need dual diagnosis care, CooperRiis does require that all incoming clientele enter into the community having 30 days of sobriety under their belts prior to admission. For these clients they receive 12-step support in addition to the other programming offerings.

Each client has a personal recovery specialist who they are assigned to. With this counselor they discuss a goal plan and a “Dream Statement” that details long term hopes and dreams for the future. During individual sessions with the recovery specialist every week client discuss how they are going to work towards achieving these goals. There are also regular sessions with the staff psychiatrist to monitor medication.

The Asheville staff includes clinical and medical team members, residential staff and community teams. The clinical staff are Master’s-level therapists who are LCSW, LPC, LCAS, RN, LPN, recovery and exercise coaches.

Extras

In addition to the individualized treatment plan, clients put together their own wellness and health plan. There is a weight loss program, training sessions and smoking cessation offered at the facility.

Additional services offered at this facility include massage therapist and acupuncture.

In Summary

CooperRiis in Asheville is a lovely campus and caring community of therapists and like minded individuals. There are alternative approaches to treatment within this program that includes a series of holistic and expressive therapist in conjunction with traditional approaches. This is a program that incorporates a long term plan that culminates in the clients returning to their communities or continuing on to the transitional program with a foundation of solid recovery skills.
