Youth Focus Review
Youth Focus in a Greensboro, North Carolina non profit that was established in 1971. This agency offers a number of services for youth and their families, including counseling, substance abuse treatment, foster care, and school services. The residential program is for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 who are struggling with acute mental illness and other behavioral issues and haven’t found success in outpatient programs. While in the residential program, the young clients receive schooling, therapy, holistic treatments and structured day to day scheduling.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facility is a 12 bed psychiatric hospital that offers home-like accommodations. The bedrooms are semi private with bathrooms in the halls. Clients attend the on-site school five days a week. There are several common areas throughout the facility, including a lounge with a TV and movies, therapy rooms, recreational areas and quiet rooms with books. While living at the facility clients are allowed to call their families every day, and must complete chores on a daily basis as well.
The 12 clients eat meals together in the shared dining room. All meals are prepared on-site by kitchen staff, and the menus always provide healthy and tasty options.
Treatment and Staff
The residential program is staffed around the clock, so all clients are supervised 24 hours a day. Typically clients receive their medication first thing in the morning, then attend classes until the afternoon. After lunch there are a series of group therapy sessions or activities. Group therapy takes on topics like trauma, body image, self harm, grief and loss, managing moods and more. There are also psychoeducation groups, peer lead groups and diversity groups.
The treatment in the residential program aims to show clients their strengths and offer alternative approaches for self defeating behavior and thoughts. The treatment uses evidence-based protocols. This includes CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and trauma-informed methods. All clients are given individualized treatment plans and timelines for their treatment. On average, they remain in the program for six to 12 months, with the intention of being reunited with their families at the end of treatment.
There is a sizable clinical staff associated with Youth Focus. They include LCSW, nurses, trauma specialists, LPC, case managers, psychiatrists, crisis managers and SAC.
Extras
There are several groups offered for clients and their families. These groups are education based, provide child care and are free to attend.
Clients have regular exercise as part of their treatment, and therapeutic yoga.
In Summary
A majority of the clients who are part of the residential program are struggling with complex mental health issues and need a significant amount of guidance and support. Youth Focus offers daily routines and structure that allow clients to fall into the program with ease, and take the anxiety out of the process. While in this program clients learn life skills and how to cope with their mental illness. The hope and intent are that after they complete their time in treatment, they are able to return to their communities successfully.
