Covington Behavioral Health Review

Acadia’s Covington Behavioral Health is primarily a mental health treatment facility that also offers some dual diagnosis care. Covington is just outside New Orleans, Louisiana. This Acadia branch has detox, inpatient services and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults. It’s worth noting, the inpatient program is usually fairly short and focuses on the stabilization of each client. Throughout each client’s treatment experience, he or she attends daily group therapy, participates in several therapeutic activities, and learns coping and life skills.

Accommodations and Food

Clients reside in a 60 bed facility in semi-private bedrooms. While the facility is technically in a clinical setting, the residential part of the building is comfortable and home-like.

The campus has several common areas including a cafeteria where clients eat three meals a day together. In between meals there are snacks available. Residents also have access to coffee, tea and juice at any time.

Other shared spaces of the facility consist of a recreation room, basketball court, and a lounge space. The latter has a TV, books, and board games.

Treatment and Staff

On average clients are in the residential phases of treatment for seven to 10 days. However, the length of time depends on the clients’ needs and the program plan that is set in place for them during the initial assessment. While Covington is not considered a substance abuse program, due to the prevalence of substance abuse affecting mental health, there is detox at this facility. This is usually accompanied by medication management.

There are different activities clients have on a daily basis. There are up to five group sessions per day, and individual meetings with an assigned primary therapist. Typically, there is one individual session per week, though there can be more if the client or treatment team requests it. Members of the social service staff, nurses, activity therapists and behavioral health techs all facilitate group sessions.

Common treatment approaches include CBT, DBT, Solution Focused therapy, crisis intervention, and creative and expressive therapies, such as music therapy and arts and crafts. Groups include process groups, psychoeducation, dietary groups and activity groups. Twelve-step isn’t a part of inpatient programming because this facility is mainly for those with a primary diagnosis regarding a mental health issue, not substance use disorder. However, 12-step intervention is available on the outpatient level.

Extras

Clients can peruse their cell phones only at certain times during the day.

Covington factors family therapy into every resident’s treatment plan. This is on an as-needed basis.

Finally, aftercare planning begins on the first day of treatment. As a result, clients know they always have the option to step down to the IOP, and receive community based treatments.

In Summary

The inpatient program focuses on stabilization and the plan after the clients leave the facility. The staff utilizes all the protocols so that the clients have time to relax while attending groups and receiving support. Above all, the programming at Covington aims to help adults during a mental health crisis get back on track.
