PORT Health Kelly House Review
North Carolina’s PORT Health is a network of care centers throughout the state. They offer substance abuse and mental health care for adolescents and adults. Kelly House is a specialty program for women who are pregnant or have babies up to six months old struggling with addiction. Somewhat of a hybrid residential treatment and sober living, it provides a safe environment and structured program that offers evidence-based therapeutic models and 12-step support. Kelly House is named after retired substance abuse professional Mary Kelly, also a recovering addict, who dedicated her career to supporting those seeking recovery from drugs and alcohol.
Accommodations and Amenities
Kelly House is a nine bedroom, one story home that has accommodations for up to six moms and their babies. Each of the clients have their own rooms for the duration of their stay. The home sits on just over one acre in a quiet and safe community. The facility is equipped with a living room with TV, dining room and kitchen. It also has a daycare center, so while the mothers are in treatment the kids are taken care of. In addition, the house features staff offices.
The clients trade off cooking duties for the household. Kelly House provides all kitchen and cooking utensils. There are weekly shopping trips or clients to pick up their preferred ingredients.
Rules and Regulations
To qualify for admission into Kelly House, the woman needs to be free of drugs and alcohol at the time of move in. They give priority to women who are pregnant and are IV drug users, women with children who are IV drug users, or those who have lost their children due to their drug use. Clients are referred to the program by doctors, the health department, or can be self referred.
Once in the program every client commits to a 20 hour a week treatment program. During this time the women learn life skills, have individual and group therapy, parenting classes and go to AA, NA or CA meetings.
Case management services are available. This entails assistance finding work, continuing education, and housing after the program is over. In addition, every client has access to community services including medical care for the baby and herself, prenatal care, and medication management if necessary.
There is staff on site 24 hours a day. LCSWs and CADCs operate Kelly House.
In Summary
The Kelly House gives expectant and postpartum mothers who struggle with addiction a safe and supportive place to live as they get back on their feet. This transitional living program offers structure, boundaries and realistic guidelines. For the clients who are selected to be in this program, in almost every case it is a lifesaver for not only them, but their children as well.
