Compass Intervention Center Review

Compass Intervention Center is a Memphis, Tennessee based dual diagnosis and addiction treatment facility that caters to adolescents between the ages of six and 17, with a particular focus on supporting children of military families. There are programs for those suffering from mental health issues, and one that focuses on co-occurring disorders. Treatment consists of structured daily schedules of therapy and activities within a safe and support residential environment.

Accommodations and Food

The residential facility is a free standing building with 108 beds. All of the rooms are double occupancy. Clients are separated by age and gender in the building, and usually just interact with their proper age group. The facility provides all bedding and towels. Depending on the level of care, toiletries are also complimentary.

There are common recreation areas in the facility that have a TV, Wifi, books and games. Compass prepares and serves all meals on site. There is a set menu, however, they can honor dietary restrictions.

Treatment and Staff

The residential level is typically reserved for young people who have tried their hand at treatment and not had prior success, or have a higher level of need. On average clients remain in the program for four to six months.

Clients go to their program seven days a week and have around the clock support from the staff. The staff regularly integrate speciality groups into the standard treatment days of group therapy, process groups and psychoeducation. This includes pet assisted therapy, art therapy, expressive modalities, and trauma focused CBT groups.

There are few differences between the dual diagnosis and mental health specific tracks at this facility. Clients in the dual diagnosis program receive substance abuse and addiction counseling and education, which includes an introduction to the 12 steps. There are also on-site AA/NA meetings three times per week.

Both levels of care focus on goals, offer medication management, have recreational therapy, milieu therapy and attend nursing groups. Both the mental health and dual diagnosis clients also attend their appropriate level of schooling every day at the facility. As such, Compass has a free standing, certified private school on campus called Compass Academy. Students remain current in their school work so they can transition back into their communities and schools as seamlessly as possible.

Staff of Compass includes Board certified psychiatrists, psychologists, recreational therapists, nurses, registered dietitians, LPCs and medical doctors.

Extras

Compass offers step-down outpatient treatment at the same facility.

Finally, family members of the clients have access to counseling services and resources by the facility.

In Summary

It’s worth noting, having a child in a residential treatment is never something any parent wants. However, there are circumstances where it is the only necessary step to get them the help they need. Thankfully, Compass Intervention Center offers a structured and safe facility. It provides all the essential therapeutic elements that they need to recover.
