RCOSA Review
Recovering Communities of Step Ahead (most commonly referred to as RCOSA) is a non-profit organization in Chicago, Illinois that specializes in the care of men and women struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. Founded in 1992, the facility seeks to heal the condition as well as the “whole person” through a comprehensive curriculum that includes a range of therapeutic methods like 12-step recovery, holistic practices, counseling, screening, case management and community outreach. RCOSA is located near public transportation, shopping and restaurants.
Accommodations and Food
Located in the North Side of Chicago in the lakefront community of Edgewater, the program offers upscale accommodations as well as a caring and stable environment ideal for residents beginning their recovery journey. In addition, the facility fosters an integration into the community. To this end, residents share comfortable two and three-bedroom apartments with one or two peers. The shared apartment provides both a community feel and plenty of personal privacy. Accommodations are fully furnished and include amenities such as a large kitchen and common area, cable TV, WiFi and a washer dryer unit. Residents are responsible for preparing their own meals.
Treatment and Staff
RCOSA provides long-term residential care for men and women struggling with a range of alcohol and substance use disorders. Before beginning treatment, clients go through an extensive intake evaluation that includes a personal medical and psychological history as well as a complete account of substance use. From there, the treatment team determines the best possible personalized care plan customized to address the specific needs, goals and circumstances of the individual client.
While this program does not provide detox, it can refer residents to a nearby partner. The length of residential care varies depending on the needs of the client, and RCOSA encourages residents to stay as long as necessary. Typically, men stay between 11 months and one year, while women generally stay eight months. The facility asks clients to remain open-minded and patient about the treatment process, as recovery is not a “one size fits all” process. Everyone’s recovery is unique.
RCOSA provides a multifaceted approach to care the includes an array of therapeutic methods and services. Clients engage in bi-weekly group therapy sessions, bi-monthly individual therapy sessions and a weekly in-house support meeting. The facility hosts outings into the community and provides regular and random screenings for alcohol and substance use. The facility also introduces residents to the 12-step recovery model.
It’s a team comprised of alcohol and drug counselor and social workers. Without a physician on staff medication management is not available for clients with co-occurring conditions.
Extras
RCOSA also understands the impact that family involvement has on the success of a sustainable, long-term recovery. As such, the facility offers family therapy sessions led by licensed therapists. Holistic practices such as mindfulness meditation and yoga are available.
The team here believes in the importance of community. While in the program, residents participate in regular community dinners and pizza nights. In addition, the facility has an active alumni program for individuals that have completed the program.
