The Third Tradition Sober Living Review
The Third Tradition is a transitional living facility for men and women in Bakersfield, California. It is a 12-step based program that offers personalized attention and a structured daily life. Marc Smith founded this program in 1990 with the intention to help people in recovery get back on their feet. This program’s focus is rebuilding core values and getting to the root of the addiction. Further, residents learn new life skills that carry over as they transition back into their own communities.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Third Tradition residential community of 11 townhouses in Bakersfield is set on the same property. The units have three bedrooms and two bathrooms in each. There is also ample living room space, kitchen and dining room. The facilities are comfortable and fairly spacious. There is a flat screen TV included in every unit, and the bedrooms are shared between two clients.
Rules and Regulations
There are three main principles to the program at The Third Tradition. The first being that clients are in a place where they can focus on themselves and their addiction without judgement. The second is the family like atmosphere that encourages each individual to strive to learn and grow on a daily basis. The final principle is giving back to the community through outreach programs and volunteerism.
Clients have to attend several 12-step meetings per week, and some of those meetings are on site. There are weekly mandatory house meetings and clients need to have some source of income within a couple weeks of move in. Some exceptions are if the person is attending school or if they are in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
It’s worth noting, The Third Tradition values the importance of cleanliness in its houses. Consequently, it expects residents to be responsible for doing chores and keeping their personal spaces tidy.
There is a house manager on site and available around the clock.
In Summary
The Third Tradition offers a solid community based sober living experience. Above all, the idea behind this program is that clients take a look at their lives and decide for themselves that it is time to make a positive change. The Third Tradition does require client accountability because it believes that’s an essential element to staying sober. In turn, it gives individuals all the tools they need to succeed once they are back on their own.
