WHOS New Beginnings Review
Founded in 1972, We Help Ourselves (WHOS) is a treatment organization with eight locations across Australia. The New Beginnings residential facility is in a suburb of Sydney. It specializes in the care of women struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. New Beginnings offers a multifaceted approach that incorporates skill building and psychoeducation into the therapeutic community model of care. Twelve-step recovery is not a component of programming, however, dual diagnosis support is available.
Accommodations and Food
New Beginnings is on a campus in the scenic Rozelle suburb. The facility provides a supportive community where clients are responsible for many daily chores. New Beginnings can accommodate between 12 and 30 clients, with individuals sharing housing with up to five peers.
Residents work together to prepare nutritious meals, with alternative options available for persons with dietary preferences or allergies.
Treatment and Staff
While WHOS New Beginnings does not require a referral. Clients do undergo an assessment over the phone prior to admission. This helps the team determine the best possible individualized treatment plan customized to meet the specific needs and goals of the individual.
Residents must be sober before beginning the program. If necessary, New Beginnings can refer new clients to local medical detox programs. Upon completion, the individual can return and begin the residential phase. Residential care typically lasts between three and four months, though the length of treatment depends on the needs of the individual client.
The therapeutic model of care is the cornerstone of programming at New Beginnings. As a result, residents work together to run the facility. Clients assume more and more responsibility and freedom as they progress through the program. In addition, the facility incorporates an array of therapeutic methods including holistic measures, evidence-based therapies, relapse prevention, psychoeducation, wellness and recreation.
Clients engage in regular group therapy rooted in ACT. The facility offers psychoeducation classes that focus on topics like body image, self-esteem and stress management. Parenting and relationship classes are also available. Residents also learn a range of practical relapse prevention techniques like identifying and avoiding triggers.
New Beginnings employs an entirely female staff of addiction specialists. For individuals with co-occurring conditions, the facility provides medical services and medication management.
Extras
In addition, New Beginnings offers a series of recreational activities including yoga, Tai chi, meditation, body movement, hiking and swimming.
Finally, New Beginnings also offers an array of general and sexual health education. Clients also work hand in hand with family support workers to establish regular child visits.
In Summary
New Beginnings is a residential treatment facility that specializes in the care of women over the age of 18 struggling with addiction. The facility offers gender-specific programming that includes evidence-based therapies, holistic practices and relapse prevention techniques. After residents finish New Beginnings, the facility provides them additional transitional housing for another few months. Above all, for anyone looking for a community treatment model, New Beginnings is a great choice.
