Chicago IllinoisThe Basics

The Southwood Interventions facility is located on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. As part of the larger ABRAXAS Group, Southwood has provided treatment for adult men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders since 1990. Services include detox, inpatient, outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) led by qualified staff members. Court ordered clients are welcome.

Accommodations and Food

The Southwood facility is located in the neighborhood of Englewood, an urban residential area. Residents are offered housing in a four-story building split up in two gender-specific units and one co-ed unit. All the units are located on the second, third and fourth floors of the building, so clients in all sections interact with one another. The co-ed and women’s unit each have 16 beds while the men’s unit has 25. Residents also share a large kitchen and a common area with a TV located on the first floor. There are also counselors’ offices and rooms for group meetings on the same floor. Each bedroom is shared between two or three people with a bed, desk and dresser for each client as well as an adjacent bathroom. A washer and dryer are available on-site.

An on-site chef prepares three meals a day. Breakfast meals are typically served hot and include options like eggs, bacon and sausage, while lunch and dinner often consist of pizza, fried chicken, pasta, soups and salads.

Treatment and Staff

For those in need of detox prior to entering treatment, there is a seven to 10 day medically monitored program available. Clients are monitored 24 hours a day by a team of nurses and a physician while also receiving counseling. Group therapy is conducted daily. Counselors focus on educating clients on the disease of addiction.

Inpatient treatment is available in three different short-term programs, with treatment lengths averaging 28 to 30 days. The female and male programs are offered to those who have insurance coverage while those who don’t are placed in the co-ed program. Regardless, each program requires residents attend group and individual therapy sessions that use a CBT approach.

Group sessions account for the majority of therapy and include topics like relapse prevention, parenting skills, coping skills and anger management. Clients also attend educational lectures once or twice a week and are asked to complete basic assignments that relate to lecture topics. On-site 12-step meetings are also mandatory on a daily basis. AA/NA meetings are held on-site after dinner but before lights out at 10:30 pm. Individual therapy sessions are held at least once a week for an hour, during which counselors monitor the progress of each client and address their specific goals. Counselors also provide a safe platform to openly discuss other personal issues.

Outpatient and IOP are for those who have either completed inpatient or who don’t need as intensive a program. The length varies depending on the client’s needs. Each program offers group and individual therapy for between six and nine hours a week. IOP is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for three hours each session while outpatient meets just on Tuesdays and Thursdays for three hour sessions. Groups applies CBT techniques while covering topics such as the negative affects of substance abuse, relapse prevention, vocational goals and interpersonal skills.

Staff at Southwood includes LADCs, LPCs, nurses and physicians.

Extras

Aside from standard therapy, residents in inpatient programs are offered alternative therapies once a week including art therapy and dance and movement therapy. Clients also go on weekend outings either Saturdays or Sundays after family visitation from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. These activities include seeing a play, going bowling or walking in the park.

Families can participate in Southwood’s family program to learn about the disease of addiction and how it affects the individual and the family. It includes multi-family group sessions and individual family counseling scheduled upon request.
