The Basics
The YWCA of Rochester/Monroe County: Steppingstone Supportive Living is a substance abuse recovery program for women making the transition to independent living in upstate New York. The Steppingstone program offers several services to women in recovery including private sober living facilities that allow children to stay with their mothers during treatment. Clients must be over the age of 18 and referred to the program by state approved chemical dependency providers.
The YWCA was originated in 1855 by Emma Robarts and Lady Mary Jane Kinnnaird in England as a movement to improve social and economic circumstances for women around the world. Over time, the organization has grown into the largest women’s group in the world and evolved to include domestic violence and substance abuse programs in 1972. Steppingstone has helped over 80 women and their children each year for over 30 years.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Steppingstone program offers accommodations in an apartment complex located in northern New York—about six hours from New York City. There are 29 private, fully furnished apartments available for women with children under 12, each decorated simply.
Each unit includes a small kitchenette with a stove and small refrigerator, one bedroom and a small bathroom. Personal cell phones and computers are allowed on site. Smoking, soda and snacks are also permitted.
Women live independently and provide their own food during their stay. Grocery trips are taken as a group twice a week. Food stamps are available for those who qualify, and assistance is available to facilitate the process of obtaining this help. Clients may stay as long as they find the program useful, but are encouraged to stay for three months minimum and no longer than a year.
Rules and Regulations
The rules at Steppingstone are more lax than those of many sober living and transitional facilities. Women are encouraged to live their lives autonomously with the goal of mirroring “real life” as much as possible, allowing clients to rise to the expectations of a balanced and sober life.
Wake up time is at 7 am and curfew is 10 pm. Clients prepare their own breakfast and then either attend a 12-step meeting or go to work or school. Individual therapy and group counseling are based on each individuals needs. Topics include skill building and overcoming the effects of domestic violence. The program does not support dual diagnosis, but focuses solely on clients remaining sober. As such, random drug tests are given and those who do not pass the test will be asked to leave the program. They may be re-admitted at a later date if they are referred again and can prove sobriety.
Steppingstone staff includes LPCs, CSACs and volunteers. A physician assists with the original intake process.
Extras
Women are given referrals to community resources for vocational training and healthcare. On-site child care is provided with drop-off services and clients become part of a sober community of other families, benefiting from fellowship and sober social activities.
