The Basics
Moonridge Academy is a residential treatment facility located in the small city of Cedar City, Utah. It is designed to help girls between the ages of 11 and 15 struggling with a range of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and trauma as well as eating disorders, low-level substance use disorders and personal issues like feelings of abandonment and grief. Founded in 2003, Moonridge incorporates evidence-based therapy into its comprehensive adventure-based curriculum.
Accommodations and Food
With room for only 16 residents, Moonridge offers a treatment environment that is at once communal and private. Residents stay in a large, wood-paneled farmhouse with an industrial-sized kitchen, dining room and a huge den with comfortable wrap-around couches, a fireplace and a TV. There is a barn and a basketball court on the property.
Residents enjoy delicious and nutritious meals. The facility can accommodate clients with dietary preferences or restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
Moonridge Academy offers individualized treatment programming for teenage girls with an array of mental health and learning disorders as well as life issues. Only treating girls between the ages of 11 and 15 allows the program to specialize the entire experience to suit the unique needs of that age range. While Moonridge is a largely adventure-based curriculum, it also integrates a number of diverse therapies including equine therapy, sand tray therapy and play therapy. Clients engage in once a week individual therapy and family therapy as well as group therapy four times a week, all rooted in evidence-based methods like DBT and EMDR. In addition, everyone participates in a half to full day of adventure therapy every Wednesday, and goes on a three-day trip once a month.
Moonridge Academy employs a multi-disciplinary team of Master’s-level therapists, teachers, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a PsyD. Individuals coping with mental health challenges can be provided with medication management.
Extras
In addition to healing, Moonridge also offers an academic curriculum with a lot of personal attention. Math, social studies, english, science and drama are all taught in classes are no larger than four students.
