The Basics
Youth and Family Counseling Agency of Oyster Bay (YFCA) has been serving the residents of Oyster Bay, New York for over forty years. A collection of 18 villages and 18 hamlets extending from North to South shore on Long Island, Oyster Bay is roughly 30 miles east of New York City.
Since its founding in 1969 as a non-profit community organization, YFCA has expanded their reach—offering assessments, individual, group and family counseling and educational services as well as medication management to the Nassau County community. In addition to psychiatric services and supportive counseling, it provides substance abuse services including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
The admissions process usually spans three to four intake sessions which include a physical exam and a visit with a psychiatric nurse practitioner to discuss possible diagnosis of co-occurring disorders and medication. If a potential client may benefit from detox or an inpatient program, referrals are available. After the intake process, the staff devises an individualized treatment plan which usually includes attending group therapy three to four times a week and an individual session once a week. Group topics include coping skills and relapse prevention, with most groups meeting in the evenings and on weekends. Additionally, all clients attend a psychoeducational group on addiction issues that meets for eighteen sessions. While YFCA doesn’t host 12-step meetings on-site, clients are encouraged to establish themselves in the AA/NA community as soon as they enter treatment. Clients work with their therapist to decide how long IOP treatment will last.
The therapists and group leaders (including LCSWs and CASACs) use CBT. YFCA’s psychiatric nurse practitioner is available to prescribe medication to those who need dual diagnosis support and a psychiatrist makes weekly visits to YFCA as well.
Extras
In addition to its substance abuse services, YFCA has extensive teen programs including suicide prevention, summer recreation programs and family planning. Parenting support and family and couples therapy are available as well. YFCA also offers services in Spanish.
In Summary
YFCA of Oyster Bay is a well-established behavioral health and substance abuse services resource for the residents of Long Island. Clients receive care from an exceptionally experienced and well-credentialed staff, including Executive Director Barbara Ruskin who also serves as Vice-President of the Nassau Alliance for Additiction Services (NAFAS). The YFCA philosophy supports the idea that healing from addiction is a long process—not an event. Their detailed intake sessions are designed to create a treatment plan that’s effective while allowing each client to meet life obligations while in treatment.
