The Basics
The Absentee Shawnee Tribal Health System provides health care services to Native Americans and Alaska Natives at three different locations in Oklahoma—two in Norman, one in Shawnee. The Shawnee and Little Axe clinics offer outpatient behavioral and mental health services while the PlusCare Clinic is an urgent care facility that treats clients on a walk-in basis. Outpatient care at Shawnee and Little Axe consists of individual therapy with LADCs and LCSWs who use evidence-based modalities during treatment. Group therapy is not available.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Absentee Shawnee and Little Axe requires each client to provide his or her Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB). The treatment process then begins with an hour-long assessment with an intake specialist to develop an individualized treatment plan including a screening for co-occurring disorders. Through this process, clients are matched with counselors who can best address their needs. Throughout treatment each client’s plan varies, though typically individuals meet with their counselor once or twice a week for at least an hour each session. Those in need of support for co-occurring disorders are offered integrated recovery plans and medication management services from a psychiatrist who is on-site every Friday.
Treatment at Shawnee grants clients a safe and intimate environment to openly discuss issues pertinent to their recovery. Sessions apply a traditional talk therapy approach, with substance abuse counselors also providing information on the disease model of addiction. The main techniques used at Shawnee include CBT and DBT, with a focus on topics like depression, anger management, anxiety, child and parenting issues and relapse prevention. Counselors also provide referrals to local peer support groups upon request.
The staff at Absentee includes LADCs, LCSWs and psychiatrists.
In Summary
The Absentee Shawnee Tribal Clinics have a variety of quality health care services available to Native Americans and Alaska Natives living in Oklahoma. Their counseling services are only available to Native Americans and Alaska Natives who have proof of ancestry, though they can receive treatment regardless of what tribe they belong to. These services are best suited for CBIC cardholders who feel they can benefit best by working intensively with one counselor.
