The Basics
With facilities and programs spread throughout South Africa, Relapse Prevention is a wide-ranging organization that offers flexible treatment services for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. All told, participants can get treatment at locations in Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, The Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape. While the specifics of each program may vary by location, the organization offers similar residential offerings at all of their different facilities.
Accommodations and Food
Because Relapse Prevention has such a wide network of homes throughout South Africa, each facility differs in its specifics. Still, all the homes are regular residences in quiet neighborhoods with rooms for both men and women in shared rooms. Typically speaking, residents share bedrooms with one to two other clients, each outfitted with twin beds, nightstands, dressers and basic decor. In addition to the rooms themselves, each home also comes with all the other normal amenities including common areas, a living room with TV, cable and WiFi and a fully equipped kitchen. While groceries are provided, residents are responsible for preparing their own meals throughout their stay.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all participants go through an intake and assessment process. Those who need to do detox must seek these services elsewhere before beginning treatment.
Though care plans may differ, treatment generally consists of individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Participants are also required to work a 12-step program throughout their stay as well. As much of the curriculum is aimed specifically at preventing chronic relapse, groups cover topics including trigger identification, life skills, emotional processing and coping strategies at length. Although basic support for anxiety or depression may be available, those in need of more thorough dual diagnosis support may need to seek additional help elsewhere.
The staff at Relapse Prevention consists of psychologists, doctors, LCSWs, occupational therapists, CADCs, nurses and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
In addition to the core program, the organization also has more specific offerings for young adults and adolescents. Beyond primary care, those who complete a program can also attend one of many step-down aftercare options as necessary. Those who complete all of these programs can get referrals to secondary sober living homes as well.
In Summary
Overall, Relapse Prevention is a wide-ranging organization that services clients all throughout South Africa. Treatment plans are individualized but each includes 12-step participation, evidence-based counseling and life skills education. Clients who have been struggling with relapse can find ample support here at many different intensity levels, with specific programs for adults and adolescents. Although anyone in need of more intensive psychiatric help might need to get additional aid elsewhere, Relapse Prevention’s residential care plans are a strong resource for anyone seeking a strong foundation in recovery from a trusted network.
