The Basics
Alsana is a premier eating disorder and co-occurring treatment program with 10 locations throughout the US. The Monterey, California location provides residential and outpatient tracks that include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Programming consists of evidence-based methods combined with nutritional education and counseling known as the Alsana Adaptive Care Model. This location provides the clients with a positive and supportive environment that is intended to set down a foundation of health and wellness in recovery.
Accommodations and Food
The recently renovated residential facility is located in Pacific Grove, an upscale area of Monterey situated between the beautiful beach communities of Carmel and Pebble Beach. The home-like living quarters resemble a resort that can accommodate up to 14 clients, who are offered private and semi-private bedrooms. Everything is provided including bedding and all linens, and the rooms are fully furnished. Clients are permitted to have their personal cell phones and computers, and Wifi is hooked up throughout the facility. There is a large living room with a TV, and a community desktop computer, big kitchen and adjacent dining room. Additional common spaces are the sitting room overlooking the huge deck with comfortable patio furniture and a lovely view.
All of the meals are healthy and filling, and clients have a say in what they would like to eat every week. Dessert is provided a few times a week, and there are coffee and tea options served with meals.
Treatment and Staff
The Monterey facility provides all three levels of care, starting with the residential phase. This is the most intensive and involves continued medical monitoring and supervision 24 hours a day. Initially clients are working to stabilize their weight so they can’t leave the premises, but after a few weeks to months as they move through their programs they are allotted day passes. During the inpatient level there are three individual sessions per week, at least two group sessions, and weekly visits to the dietitian and psychiatrist. Medication management is a critical element of treatment as are the supervised meals and snacks, which are followed up by a process group. There are also regular “homework” assignments that clients have to finish.
The PHP is the next step-down level, which can include up to 12 hours per day of treatment. In some cases clients skip the residential step and begin with the PHP. There are recovery housing options for this level as well. The PHP includes the same characteristics of the residential program with the added freedom of being able to either go home or to the recovery house at the end of the day.
Finally the IOP is a three to five day program that challenges clients to really start implementing their newly acquired life skills while attending regular therapy. The IOP also steps down to one supervised meal every day and one or two individual counseling sessions.
Treatment is entirely individualized and therapeutic approaches are CBT, trauma-informed CBT, art and music therapy, experiential and expressive therapies and EMDR. Dual diagnosis clients who have a substance abuse issue in addition to their eating disorder attend on-site AA meetings and are taken to community meetings as well.
Staff members operating Alsana’s Monterey facility include a medical director, psychiatric nurses, an LMFT, an LPC, a dietitian, and a psychiatrist.
Extras
Clients have weekly outings as a group on the weekends. Activities include the movies, shopping and nail salon visits.
The family program consists of an intensive week of counseling and activities on site, as well as ongoing family support.
