The Basics
Founded in Downey, California in 1992, Southern California Alcohol and Drugs Program, Inc. (Casa Libre) is a nonprofit organization operating under Volunteers of America. Casa Libre offers outpatient substance abuse programs, primarily to clients with referrals from the Department of Children and Family Services. But the facility also regularly enrolls clients who voluntarily opt for treatment.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial phone assessment with a potential client, a Casa Libre counselor determines whether he or she is suited for the program. If the counselor believes the client is a good fit, the client is placed on a waiting list to enter treatment. If the counselor feels the client needs a more advanced level of care, Casa Libre refers him or her to an outside detox and/or residential treatment program.
Casa Libre offers both a three-month track and six-month track outpatient curriculum to adult men and women. The counseling consists of both group and individual therapy. Clients are required to attend two 90-minute group meetings per week. English-speaking groups are conducted in the morning and Spanish-speaking groups meet in the afternoon. Clients have individual sessions with counselors once a week.
The groups are usually between 14 and 16 clients in total and are lead by a CADC. The counselor aims to change the clients’ thinking patterns by way of relapse prevention techniques and CBT. The counselor also discusses anger and stress management, as they relate to addiction.
Although Casa Libre is not a dual diagnosis capable facility, it does have a direct pipeline to a local mental health agency to which it refers clients with co-occurring disorders.
In addiction to utilizing CBT and other evidence-based treatment methods, Casa Libre also advocates the 12 steps. The steps and other fundamentals of 12-step recovery are often dissected in the group meetings. While in treatment, clients also attend outside NA/AA meetings and are required to find a sponsor as quickly as possible. The number of the required AA and NA meetings is based on the counselor’s individual evaluation of each person.
Family members are not allowed to be on Casa Libre’s premises while their loved one is in a group or individual meeting.
Casa Libre does not have an official aftercare program so upon completion of treatment, counselors will refer clients to additional outside outpatient or aftercare programs if necessary.
As of this publication, the staff is comprised of one CADC alongside a small administrative support staff and an intern who is in the process of becoming a counselor. The intern sits and participates in group meetings but the individual counseling is led by the main counselor.
In Summary
Casa Libre is an affordable route for anyone seeking outpatient treatment in the Downey area. Additionally, Casa Libre’s bi-lingual availability make it a more viable option for the area’s large population of Spanish speakers. Case Libre also seems to have a comprehensive understanding of addicts’ tendency to hinder their own progress due to old mindsets and built-in negative thought patterns. The focus on permanently changing those behaviors will make any person receiving treatment here much less susceptible to relapse.
