The Basics
A Renewed Mind (ARM) is a non-profit organization for individuals and families affected by mental health and substance abuse issues. There are three ARM facilities located in northwest Ohio, including Perrysburg (established in 2011), Toledo (established in 2007) and Tremainsville (established in 2012). A residential treatment branch of the ARM services, the Synergy program, is located in Toledo and provides treatment for adolescent males with substance abuse issues. ARM also offers step down treatment at its facilities including an outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Treatment at ARM focuses on evidence-based practices.
Accommodations and Food
The Synergy program provides services to adolescent males between the ages of 11 and 18, with clients residing in the refurbished COMPASS (Comprehensive Addiction Service Center) Annex, located on a gated campus. The Compass Annex resembles a dormitory and houses up to 20 residents. Clients sleep two to a room, and group meals take place in a central cafeteria three times a day.
Treatment and Staff
Clients complete diagnostic assessments and evaluations at intake to determine what level of treatment would be appropriate. Treatment modalities at the three outpatient facilities include trauma-informed therapy, CBT, Motivational Enhancement Thearpy (MET,) reality therapy, couples therapy, play therapy for children, medical somatic services, psychoeducational classes, the Seven Challenges model and relapse prevention strategies. Families are highly encouraged to join clients for group therapy sessions (and individual therapy sessions at Synergy) for the family program.
Treatment at Synergy lasts 45 to 90 days, with the average length of stay being 45 days. Each week, staff guide residents through 30 hours of therapy. Individual and group sessions are required every day and staff use evidence-based treatment to help clients overcome substance abuse. Dual-diagnosis support is available when necessary as well. Group topics include relapse prevention, peer relationships and anger management.
Clients continue with schooling throughout treatment following the Toledo Public School curriculum (Synergy partners with the public school system to provide on-site classes). Synergy also includes the Neighborhood Health Association’s Daisy Smith Pediatrics Clinic for medical needs. Case management is available to prepare clients with discharge plans.
At each of ARM’s outpatient treatment facilities there are also IOP options available with an average treatment length of 12 weeks. Clients attend three hours of treatment for three to four days a week. This again includes individual and group therapy, with gender-specific groups available. ARM does not offer 12-step groups. Staff work with clients who have been court-ordered as well as those who enter treatment on self-referral.
The SA2, or Substance Abuse-Self Awareness, is the ARM’s step-down outpatient track. Treatment through SA2 lasts 10 weeks, and includes individual, group and family therapy twice a week for two hour sessions—for a total of 12 hours. Gender-specific psychoeducational groups are also available in outpatient treatment. Specific groups cover relapse prevention, emotional management and a recovery skills group. Medication-assisted treatment is available for clients who are chemically dependent on opiates, with medications like Suboxone, Zubsolv and Vivitrol provided. Additionally, medical staff provide evaluations, medical monitoring and laboratory services to clients.
Staff at Perrysburg, Toledo and Tremainsville include CSWs, MFTs, CADCs, physicians, therapists and case managers. The staff are licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapy Board as well as the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board.
Extras
ARM is a non-profit agency, and as a result many services provided are available in large part through donations and grants awarded to the organization. Insurance and Medicaid are also accepted, when applicable.
Aegis Science Corporation is contracted with ARM to provide forensic laboratory services, including weekly urinalyses.
Finally, the Tremainsville facility offers ARM Occupational Support Services (ARM OSS). ARM OSS is a pre-employment screening service that offers drug testing and BCI/FBI background checks.
In Summary
At A Renewed Mind, clients have an array of therapeutic modalities available. Services also extend to client families, as ARM prioritizes rebuilding relationships and healing of the whole family system—especially for adolescents in the Synergy program. Though ARM is a non-profit organization, the comprehensive services provide high-quality treatment for individuals of all ages.
