The Basics
Founded in 2013 by recovering addict Scotty Brown, Minute by Minute Sober Living in the small city of Murrieta, California, is about halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Minute by Minute provides affordable gender-specific sober living for men and women in an upscale neighborhood.
Accommodations and Amenities
Minute by Minute Sober Living has two houses—one for men, and one for women. The original location is a 3,200 square foot stucco house which accommodates 11 men. Recently, they opened a 2,500 square foot, female house in the same neighborhood that accommodates eight clients. Residents are are paired in comfortably furnished rooms, which contain twin beds, a shared dresser, night stands, lamps and closet space. The women’s house has three full bathrooms and the men’s has four. The houses each have multiple refrigerators, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, cable and a house computer with Internet.
While residents are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation, the kitchens have basic food items like cereal and coffee as well as all the dishes and cookware necessary to make meals. The clients often dine out as a group at local restaurants nearby, which include sushi and Mexican cuisine.
Rules and Regulations
Minute by Minute requires potential clients to have undergone detox prior to admittance, with the belief that those experiencing from withdrawals should be under medical supervision. Additionally, new clients must pass an alcohol and drug screening. There is no maximum length of stay, but new clients are asked to commit to at least 60 days when they move in.
Weekly requirements include attending five 12-step meetings, obtaining a sponsor and working the steps. Those who opt for a more faith-based approach can attend Celebrate Recovery instead. As long as the recovery support group is based on the 12 steps, clients are not limited to AA or NA meetings. Other rules include performing basic household chores, finding and maintaining employment and being at all house meetings.
Random drug and alcohol tests are given weekly and clients testing positive are immediately evicted. This action is done to ensure the safety of the house and well-being of the other residents. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Extras
The men’s house has a weight bench for the guys to work out. Minute by Minute is a member of the Riverside County Sober Living Network.
In Summary
Minute by Minute Sober Living is led by Brown, who has eight years clean and has built a solid reputation in the Riverside County recovery community. The homes are so popular that he usually only takes clients in by referral, which is why this facility does not have a website. Although this is not a good fit for those who don’t want to work a 12-step program, Minute by Minute provides a high-quality affordable atmosphere for recovery.
