The Basics
Located in Oxnard, California, Hollywood Beach Recovery, a sober living facility for men, was founded by CEO Berkeley Dains who sports long-term recovery. While some of their residents are enrolled in an outpatient protocol at their sister facility, Changing Tides Treatment Center which opened January 2015 also by Dains, attendance in treatment is not a requirement for sober living residents.
Accommodations and Amenities
Hollywood Beach Recovery has two homes that are located near the beach, just 15 miles north of Malibu and 14 miles south of Santa Barbara. Each house has seven beds. The main house sports a white stucco Mediterranean-style exterior with a clay tile roof. The interior of the house boasts high ceilings, white walls and earth-toned furnishings. Residents are paired in bedrooms furnished with twin beds with headboards, houseplants, framed artwork and closet space. Single rooms are also available, depending on occupancy. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Cable TV, sparkling ocean views, transportation, and a fully furnished media room.
At Hollywood Beach Recovery, pantries and refrigerators are stocked with groceries purchased by staff. While clients prepare their own breakfasts and lunches, the staff prepares dinners in a fully equipped kitchen. The emphasis here is on treating the body, as well as the mind and spirit. While clients are welcome to purchase their own candy and sodas, staff refrains from supplying food items containing processed sugars. Typical dinner entrees include spaghetti and meatballs, steak and lasagna. Coffee is provided. Staff also provides onsite around the clock supervision. The 30-day sober living cost is $3,500.
Rules and Regulations
Hollywood Beach Recovery recommends a six-month minimum length of stay, with the belief that the more time clients put into building a foundation in their recovery, the more successful they will be at remaining clean and sober. Potential clients are interviewed, and receive clinical assessments, which determine if Hollywood Beach Recovery is the right fit.
A typical daily schedule includes a 9 am morning meditation. After meditation, some residents attend the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Changing Tides Treatment Center, while other residents go to the gym or work out on the beach. These activities are typically followed by a meeting. In the afternoons clients focus on short-term goals, which include getting a job or pursuing an academic education. Staff provides hands-on guidance. At 5:30 pm, residents gather for a daily family-style dinner. In the evenings, they are transported to a recovery support group meeting. In keeping with the belief that AA/NA is a program of attraction, clients are also exposed to other meetings including SMART Recovery and the Buddhist-based Refuge Recovery.
Besides a mandatory house meeting, weekends include museum outings, movie events and other recreational activities. The houses have a zero tolerance policy for those under the influence, or those who fail a drug or urine test. There is a ten pm curfew Sundays through Thursdays, and a midnight curfew on Fridays and Saturdays.
Changing Tides Treatment Center provides two outpatient tracks. One is from 9 am to noon, and the other is from six pm to nine pm. Clients receive individualized treatment plans. Levels of care vary per client’s needs. Weekly treatment includes group and individual therapy and life skills coaching, nutritional counseling. Changing Tides Treatment Center utilizes several evidence-based modalities, including CBT, DBT and trauma-based therapy. Groups are kept small, with between six and seven individuals in a group. Individual therapy and psychiatric counseling are scheduled based on each client’s needs. The staff includes six licensed Master’s-level therapists, one psychologist, a psychiatrist and two addiction specialists, including Dains. While Changing Tides Treatment Centers accepts PPO health insurance plans, the out-of-pocket 30-day IOP cost, including sober living is $8,500.
Extras
Since the houses are a few feet away from the beach, residents enjoy fishing, surfing and other ocean-related activities. Hollywood Beach Recovery is a CARF accredited facility and a member of the Ventura County Sober Living Network.
In Summary
While this gorgeous sober living community is fairly new, Hollywood Beach Recovery has deep roots in the local recovery community and boasts a highly qualified staff with impressive credentials. For men seeking a high-end sober living environment that also provides comprehensive outpatient services and is just a few feet from the Pacific, this is the perfect fit.
